What works

After tweaking the graphics options via command-line and registry, I played the first few missions without any issues.

What does not

Using the "gl" device gives crazy colours and proportions. Use "d3d" as your device.

(note: I think the game is wrapping d3d calls to opengl underneath, as you still need to choose between rgl.dll and opengl32.dll in the registry. This setting is distinct from the "device" which can be specified on the command-line).

The game crashes if you try to change certain display options, such as selecting the OpenGL render or changing resolution.

The game doesn't like horizontal resolutions greater than 1600 pixels.

The aspect ratio is incorrect in full-screen without a registry tweak on widescreen displays.

There's significant colour banding on the backdrop if your desktop is only in 16-bit colour. The actual game "screenDepth" setting doesn't seem to matter.

All these issues are present on Windows 7 too.

Additional Comments

The game is sensitive to the working directory. Launch from the game directory if you encounter errors of missing files or missing CD. These settings worked best for me in Windowed mode (This is 1600x1080 in decimal): [Software\\Sierra On-Line\\Cataclysm] "glToSelect"="opengl32.dll" "screenHeight"=dword:00000438 "screenWidth"=dword:00000640 wine cataclysm.exe /disableAVI /device d3d /window These settings worked best in fullscreen 16:9 (This is 1600x900@32 in decimal): [Software\\Sierra On-Line\\Cataclysm] "glToSelect"="opengl32.dll" "screenDepth"=dword:00000020 "screenHeight"=dword:00000384 "screenWidth"=dword:00000640 wine cataclysm.exe /disableAVI /device d3d Using the default rgl.dll would fail to enter/exit fullscreen reliably, resulting in a low-res scrolling desktop. The default is more reliable under Windows 7. For a full list of command-line options: wine cataclysm.exe /?
