What works

Installer, almost to the end. Fails after you tell it not to create icons, but the application seems to have been properly installed.

The game plays wonderfully with sound and graphics

What does not

After a race the game sometimes hangs, and trying to start the game for the first time it hung consistently until I tried from a serial console under the wine debugger (obviously setting the DISPLAY variable appropriately). It then ran and kept starting every time ...

Additional Comments

Silver rating because it took some tinkering to get it to play and then it sometimes freezes right after a race. If you are in a tournament (and particularly if you are winning) it sucks. This is the error that seems to kill the application: err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x110048 "heap.c: main process hea\p section" wait timed out in thread 000f, blocked by 0018, retrying (60 sec) It might make a difference if you have a multiple core CPU or not. I do, and it looks like a race condition to me.

HowTo / Notes

Installation
  1. For best results, try using one of the WINE/distribution combinations listed as working above.
  2. Run winecfg and set Windows Version to Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME.
  3. Also, you may want to check "Emulate a virtual desktop" on the Graphics tab if you have trouble with the game not exiting nicely.
  4. Run wine 'D:\setup\english\setup.exe', replacing 'D:\' with the letter of your CD drive, and 'english' with 'spanish' if you want to run the Spanish version.
  5. Follow the installation instructions on-screen. There will be a few errors, but just click 'Ok' and keep going. Don't try to register at the end.
  6. In a console, change to the NFS3 installation directory by typing something like cd '.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Electronic Arts/Need For Speed III'. Trying to run the game by clicking the icon, or from a different directory, will not work.
  7. Run the game with wine nfs3.exe -d3d0.
