What works

General gameplay
Patching (using PyLotRO)

Pretty much everything works flawlessly that I came across except for some audio glitches (See what does not work section).

Testing included playing from level 60 to new level level cap at 65, so I'd say it was a pretty thorough test.

What does not

.NET based game launcher that installs with the game.  Use PyLotRO instead.

Audio sometimes doesn't work on launch on my system, and sometimes is somewhat distorted but it appears to be a Pulseaudio problem with my sound hardware, so YMMV greatly.


What was not tested

In game voice chat.  You can hear other players, but I was unable to test sending due to issues with my hardware.

NOTE: These instructions and the below script are now out of date and may need re-testing & updating­.

Installer Script


­The installer script is now at version 0.1.5 (updated May 20th, 2010).  This automates most of the process for installing LotRO, by correctly initializing your Wine environment. However, as of the Siege of Mirkwood release, the downloader/installer program from the website no longer work­s in Wine (see ­related bug here).

EU Customers

The below script should work fine, although you'll have to manually unpack the installer files and run the setup yourself (that part isn't automated).

US Customers

The previous US installer program still works, but unfortunately, Turbine has removed it and it is no longer available for download.  At this time, these instructions lack a real working solution (check back soon for an update to this).  If you have access to a previous installation or the setup files (a setup program with the large .bin files) then you can still run that setup and then bring it up to date with the patcher.

­Running the Setup Script

Open a terminal window and run the following commands:

wget -O lotrosetup.tmp
# pastebin always windows-izes your text files, so we have to convert them back
cat lotrosetup.tmp | tr -d '\r' > &&
    rm lotrosetup.tmp
chmod u+x

Using the minimal patcher (US Customers)

As mentioned earlier, there is not yet a complete solution for US customers using a new install, but this will get part of the files if you can obtain the .dat files elsewhere.  You must download this file from rapidshare and save it to your home directory.  If you have never used rapidshare before, it's pretty much a pain.  Click on the "Free User" button and then you have to wait some odd number of seconds before it finally displays a "download now" button -- this is to try to force you to pay them money.  If somebody else wants to host this file, PLEASE do and post the new link!!! Once you have downloaded the file, run the following commands (presuming you saved it to your home directory):

export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-lotro
tar xf  ~/lotro-minimal-patcher.tbz2 -C ${WINEPREFIX}

You may now either run the launcher by clicking the "LOTRO Launcher" icon the setup script made on your desktop or run the following additional commands in the same terminal window:

cd "${WINEPREFIX}/drive_c/Program Files/Turbine/The Lord of the Rings Online"

Please read the following notes:

  • In wine 1.1.21, towards the end of running the setup program, RegSvcs.exe crashes.  However, once you click OK, the setup continues and completes, so this may be a harmless error.  This doesn't happen in wine 1.1.20.
  • When running the lotro setup program, it will prompt you that the target install directory already exists and ask if it should install files there anyway.  Select "Yes" as it only exists because the script pre-populates it with the script.
  • This script doesn't install the GUI launcher, which is also described below.
  • Note the troubleshooting steps for European users listed in the "Regedit Settings" below, which have not been integrated into the script.
  • This script configures a few default LOTRO rendering settings as work-arounds to known issues. If you change your video settings (and it's recommended that you click "Detect Optimal Settings" in-game) then you may need to revert some settings under "Advanced Graphics Settings" to resolve these issues: ­
    • Post Processing Effects = Enabled (checked) may cause in-game labels to be partially or fully obscured.  To resolve, either uncheck this box or go into "UI Settings" under the "Floating Information" section and enable "Floating Text Always On Top" option.
    • Landscape Shadow Quality > Low may cause large areas of land to be almost black (i.e., unlit).  To resolve, set to Low.  Update: this bug is fixed in 1.1.24!

Performance Tweaks

When running on Linux, you should turn down the texture cache to something very small like zero to 5. Turbine added this functionality to make up for Window's exceedingly poor and intentionally crippled file caching (in hopes you'll upgrade to server I suppose).  But on Linux, it will only waste memory. (However, extensive tests on this haven't been run.)


­Manual Setup

Since Lord of the ­Rings Online Mines of Moria actually needs files that can break or prevent other installed apps from running, is better to create clean isolated wine prefix for MoM.

So lets get started

Open a terminal and write

export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-lotro

Ever on the same terminal that you have exported your WINEPREFIX, write the following commands:

wine cmd /c it worked # Should output "it worked"
wineserver -k
wget -nv
chmod u+x ./winetricks
./winetricks win2k
./winetricks gecko    
./winetricks vcrun2005    
./winetricks vcrun2005sp1

On the same terminal, write:


And add the keys from regedit section.

Just to keep it clear, I repeat, its very important that you are sure that you are running all these commands from a terminal that you have exported your target WINEPREFIX, otherwise you can end breaking your default .wine directory.


If you followed the previous steps, you have ready an environment to install MoM without problems.  At this time, the SoM installer does not work.  You can choose to:

  • Install Lord of the Rings Online Mines of Moria from its original DVD
  • Install any recent full game client (like Book 11, 13 or 14), and updating with standalone patches to MoM, latest wine versions has no problems installing any of these. European Links
  • Update a previous install using the autopatcher from the GUI or CLI launcher scripts (this one is really slow)

Example, in a terminal, write:

­export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-lotro
wine lotrosetup.exe­

Launcher Script

Current version of command line launcher is v0.9.9c released 10 / April/ 2008, if you have a previous version please update to this one. ­

To launch the client on Linux you need to download this script and this support script (rename it to Extra details about the script can be found on the script developers site.

These scripts must be placed in directory containing the file lotroclient.exe

To run the script type either bash scriptname or ./scriptname if the scripts permissions allow for execute (where scriptname is the name of the downloaded script)

*NOTE: In some newer distros like Ubuntu 7.10 an maybe upper this command line script fails as newer versions of wget need a "--no-check-certificate" switch after every wget command to work properly, please uncomment (remove the leading #) the following line on lotrolauncher.script: #wgetNoCheckCertOption="--no-check-certificate"

An alternative to the CLI launcher is the GUI launcher, available here, note you need the mono compiler installed to compile (see README for additional information), once compiled place the run and ico files in your LOTRO directory and run using either ./ or mono It works with the EU and US version, actually it can patch the game via Tools->Patch. The GUI launcher is not affected by the wget related issue.

winecfg Settings

Windows Version: Windows 2000 or Windows XP

regedit Settings

From an exported terminal insert the following as string values:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D/VideoMemorySize = < amount of video memory ie 256 >

If you're using a European client you may need to use the following if your client is failing to update:

Inno Setup: App Path = C:\\Program Files\\The Lord of the Rings Online 

UserPreferences.ini settings

Note this file is found in the equivalent of your "My Documents\The Lord of the Rings" folder which defaults to ~/The Lord of the Rings

If you do not currently have a UserPreferences.ini file run the game using the script or gui it will crash with an error but will create a default UserPreferences.ini file


Those settings will enable you to start the game and log in as a character. If you change any settings via the graphics or advanced graphics tabs ensure that those setting are correct (ie choosing a new level of graphics via the graphics tab may alter some of these values)


If you have Book 11 or upper install the latest command line launcher script version v0.9.9 will update automatically your client via the patch servers.

Otherwise if you have an older than Book 11 install, you will need to update to Book 11 on a Windows system or VM as the command line launcher script does not support older patchclient.dll versions, and copy the entire client into your Linux box, ensuring that you are the owner of the resulting files and permissions for files, folders and subfolders are set to write and execute, from that point you can update normally using the command line launcher script.

Playing the game

You should use Wine 1.1.2 or upward, as from that point Wine includes a fix that easen worst lag scenarios on LOTRO.

For CLI launcher is better to have a small script that automates launch, copy the following in your favorite text editor and save it as

LOTRO isn't the easiest game to setup, installing LOTRO requires some level of understanding Linux and Wine commands, procedures shown below are valid for English systems, so other languages might need to change some paths.

If you are new to Linux or Wine please ask for help here first, it will be faster and more accurate for beginners.

Updating to Free-2-Play requires msvc71.dll from vcrun2003
Users updating an earlier install to LotRO F2P will need msvc71.dll (for upgrades from pre-F2P installs) from vcrun2003 to patch. Simply use winetricks to install vcrun2003 when you also install vcrun2005 for new installs or `winetricks vcrun2003` to add it to your current install.

Could not initialize Direct3D

I copied the game file over from a friend's computer, and everything seemed to be going pretty well, the game imported properly, patches just fine, even downloads the news. However when I put in my username and password I get the following error within wine

"Could not initialize Direct3D. Must have DirectX 9.0 or higher [105]"

I have used winetricks to install d3dx9. And no progress has been made yet.

I've tried importing the registry, and manually tweaking my Video Memory Settings in RegEdit. Nothing seems to be destroying this error.

I've googled the problem for a few hours to no avail, anyone have a brilliant idea that will fix this. I can provide any terminal outputs, or logs that you require. If you require.

Well an output of this will be fine:

glxinfo | egrep "direct rendering|OpenGL"

But the DX9 trick is a hack and it dosen't behave flawlessly for everyone and usually have severe memoy leaks (game crashes after a while).

So you might like to test the method we were currently testing, it seems to be problem free (aside of that the downloader's GUI isn't correctly rendered).

If test it be sure that you are using wine 1.3.3 or upper.

From a terminal (console) do the following, of course you need to download the pando downloader form the lotro website:

export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-pando
chmod +x winetricks
./winetricks vcrun2008
wine lotrohigh.exe

This will download the very latest LOTRO client, you can skip this step if you have the very latest install files but if don't I recommend this way because older (updated) clients are showing issues, as you see.

When you have the install files do the following:

export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-lotro
wine "Desktop/The Lord of the Rings Online/Mirkwood.exe"

(or where you downloaded the install files).

And from then you should use Pylotro to play the game.

As far as my game files themselves go, I just copy-pasted them from a functioning version of the game downloaded and installed on a Windows machine. They should be the latest version of the game.

I actually did not have Wine 1.3.3, so I just downloaded and installed the latest release that Fedora repos had. Which is 1.3.4, actually.

I run into a problem fairly early on, when I try to run winetricks for vcrun2008.exe Wine tells me it's been updated but

wine: created the configuration directory '/home/Kae/.wine-pando'
err:mmdevapi:load_libopenal Couldn't load cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
wine: configuration in '/home/Kae/.wine-pando' has been updated.

You're using a 64-bit WINEPREFIX, most of winetricks hasn't been fixed for win64 yet.

From there when I try to run LOTROStandard.exe (I'm on an oldish laptop =P)

wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\lotrostandard.exe"

I've moved lotrostandard.exe all over my computer, and even given the direct path to it, but no matter what I say, wine has decided not to find the installer.

I'm still the last bit is a stupid error that I'll work on. It's more the vcrun2008 I'm worried about.

Hopefully I can be helpful to others in my mistakes =P

vcrun2008 is only need for the pando installer (that's the idea of the separate prefix .wine-pando), you will not need it for running lotro, and that's why you will install it in another (and clean) prefix, .wine-lotro

So redo this.

export WINEPREFIX=$HOME/.wine-lotro
wine "Desktop/The Lord of the Rings Online/Mirkwood.exe"

Also, that is a pretty strange behaviour for wine, but in the worst case it can be easly fixed moving the whole directory into the prefix.


mv Desktop/LOTRO Standard Res Installer Files $HOME/.wine-lotro/drive_c

wine "C:\\LOTRO Standard Res Installer Files\\lotrostandard.exe"

Okay, well. I gave up on the downloader but got a copy of the install files from a friend. I ran them and everything seemed sort of okay. The paths of pylotro were pretty messed up, but again I've gotten to the login screen.

I've followed your directions very closely and everything is installed in the .wine-lotro directory. I feel the answer is close.

I try to log in and I get the white info-box-terminal-thing. This time I get no error messages, but it seems to hang indefinitely.

My friend gave me the High Res install files, so he's downloading the Standard Ones in case the problem is my graphics card being full of hatred.

Thanks so much for your help so far. Where should I go from here I am running a complete blank. Kind of like my PyLotRo. Uhh.. haha?

Hi-Res Graphics Enabled

Check that the config is right, if you suspect that Hi-Res Graphics are misbehaving, disable them from there (Hi-Res Graphics Disabled), an well, after double checking that your Pylotro config is right, if the game still refuses to start, remove the fixme-all from WINEDEBUG field, run the game, copy/paste the output in post the link here, and lets see if we can do something. With luck it wouldn't be a system misconfiguration (which will be hellish to locate).

Grid after Turbine screen?

I just installed this for testing today, and so far it looks pretty nice.

There is just one thing that bugs me: On startup, right after the initial Turbine animation, is a grey screen with a white grid (after which the game proceeds fine..)

I assume this is something that's broken, though I don't see a bug for it. Does anyone know what the game show on Windows when you get to that point, before I go to the trouble of copying the files over to my Windows partition to check?

Dear Wine Community.
I have recently decided to give LotRO a shot and installed it on my computer (Linux 11.3) using Wine 1.12 and I have also installed all the Standalone patches, including Mirkwood.
But when I start the GUI (Pylotro) and set it up to the correct folder it gives me following error:

[E04] Error accessing GLS data centre.

On top of that the console is also giving me 4 errors that run along the lines of:

fixme:system:SetProcessDPIAware stub!
err:module:import_dll Library QtSvg4.dll (which is needed by L"Z:\\home\\anonymous\\.wine-lotro\\drive_c\\Programme\\Codemasters\\PyLotRO\\qt4_plugins\\iconengines\\qsvgicon4.dll") not found

Any help is appreciated.

I had this error about an hour ago, and it kept coming up even after re-installing the pylotro client (wine-installed .exe version). I did a Google search for "qtsvg4.dll" and downloaded the file, which I extracted and put into my wineprefix's windows/system32 directory (since the error mentioned it was missing). Part of the error went away, but still no go.

Then, while still searching for a solution, I tried launching PyLotro again, on the hunch that it was an error on their side (like server maintenance or something), and it just magically worked! Seems like a problem on their end that went way an hour or so later.

I hope your problem has since been resolved, and that this post saves some folks from pulling their hair out needlessly.

PyLotRO is not able to communicate with the Turbine master datacenter.

There can be any number of reasons for this... ranging from the fact that the Turbine servers are down, to the fact that you are not connected to the Internet... and everything in between!

This is normally a "simple" communications issue -- try again later.

"Later" can be anywhere from a few seconds (i.e. however long it takes to cancel and re-launch PyLotRO) to several hours depending upon the particular cause.

Usually a 2-5 minute wait is all that is necessary... unless it is a "scheduled outage" by Turbine (or your ISP).

Everyone is seeing this error today...Mac & PC alike. Turbine is currently having datacenter issues. This has been going on since roughly 11 am today...As of their last twitter update (about an hour agO0, they have techs in the datacenter working on the problem. This problem is not only affecting the game servers, but also the website/forums, DDO services and Asheron's Call services. The last time I looked, none of the domains would even resolve via DNS lookups, so it's a bad problem. All I can say is to keep an eye on Turbine's twitter feed, as that'll likely be the first place the news hits when the problem is fixed.

Hello everyone.

I have given up to get LotRO running anytime soon and not worked on this error anymore. But a couple days ago I got myself a completely patched version of LotRO, fired it up with the Launcher scripts you can find here and it works.
My mistake was trying to install and patch it from CD. I hoped it would work but in the end you won't get around grabbing yourself a complete installation from a buddy's computer.

The game works fine. Only a minor glitch with the floor tiles (they kind of overlap instead of smoothly transitioning) but nothing that would hinder fun to ensue. : D

Interesting thing is though, that everytime I close LotRO my desktop dumps the red and green lights, turning my screen into a dark blue mess. Logging out and in again fixes the issue though.

Fixing "strange" interior graphics

On my machine the auto detection for graphics recommends "High" but when I entered interior spaces most of the objects were black and navigation was difficult. Solution found to be to set "Material Detail" to low and "High Quality lighting" to off. All other settings could be left as is

Are you sure that this isn't fixed by turning Landscape Shadow Quality down? I would prefer if you could try it and post your results as this information may confuse others with this problem. If not, then I'll attempt to reproduce it and make sure it's properly documented.

Also, be aware that when changing some settings, it doesn't immediately apply. This is really goofy. So I always uncheck & then re-check something like "high quality lighting" that does cause the graphics settings to be immediately applied. This is a bug in lotro as far as I know and can cause a lot of confusion as to the solution to a graphics problem (i.e., you change the setting that actually fixes it, but it doesn't apply immediately so it appears to not work, then you make another change that does cause it to "apply", etc.)

If you could try this and post the results I would appreciate it. Thanks!

I can confirm that turning Landscape shadows down to Low of disabled had no effect. Also just to clarify my problem only occurs when in an interior location (i.e. Inside the last homely house) I can switch back on High Quality Lighting and material detail to high as long as I am in an exterior location

i have exact the same Problem. In buildings, homes, moria, i have a black picture instead a 3d mini portrait, the 3d doll in character screen is black, and most surfaces inside are black.

Only if i turn down material detail to low and deactivate high quality light the graphics looks fine. If i activate one of them or set it to > low, all turns to black again.

Hardware is GeForce 7900 GS with lucid's recommended driver "195.36.24" and Wine 1.2. On my wife's machine, there is a GeForce 9500 GT with the same driver, also on lucid lynx, and wine 1.2 with NO Problems. In both cases winecfg is set to windows 2000.

Is it possible that just updating from a previous version of wine to 1.2 instead of purging the old wine an reinstall the new could cause this problem?

ubuntu 10.04 with 4GB memory and 2GB swap.
wine 1.2R6 and nvidia graphics card.

i typically run 1680x1050 with very high graphics. all looks great and well when running about. at times when i enter a new area, wine crashes. it has also crashed on me once during the turtle fight in the water works; not an area changes but perhaps more graphics going on.

1. i don't know if lotro has a memory leak or not? as the game runs, more and more memory is being taken up; but not usually a problem.
2. when entering a new area, it just crashes on me. i've turned my textures down to low and it seems to go away.

I've done everything that was posted here.

I changed my registry, patched wine and got the CLI launcher to run.
Launcher works fine, but as soon as it loads LOTRO it crashes without any errors or warnings.

The installer doesn't work either, neither the DVD one nor the one that is available for download here.

Right now I don't understand why this works for others, I have wine rc6 as well as Ubuntu 10.04. According to this page it should run great...

i have also ubuntu 10.04 and i had also some problems to get it working.
during the installation/configuration i made some notes what i've done, maybe it can help you:

first i had ubuntu 9.04 with the wine package installed (don't know which wine version it was) and lotro worked fine, only i didn't hear the ingame voice and the sound in the video seq. but then i reinstalled ubuntu 10.04 (i kept only a few config files) and then installed wine1.2. then i had a problem with my friendlist (couldn't see/add friends) and the userchannel (couldn't write and read). so i removed wine1.2 and then installed the wine1.0 package. this solved all my problems and also now i heard the ingame voice and the sound in the videosequences.

this i also found in my notes, but i don't know the version of wine i had installed when i noted it:
"when i have pulseaduio installed and start the game it don't start. i can see the game-window for 1-3secs and then it quits without an error. "

maybe you should try to remove pulseaudio and/or try to install the wine1.0 package.

Hey, thanks! uninstalling the sound package totally did it for me!
The game still crashes upon loading characters, but it appears i still have the mines of moria version :S
I'll do some updating and report on how it goes.
Graphics Card Overheating

I was experiencing crashes that I first thought were bug 19803, "Lord of the Rings Online crashes when loading if Texture Detail is set higher than Very Low"

After about 12 to 15 minutes of play, my laptop would simply turn off, usually when I entered a new zone. After rebooting, it would fail as soon as I launched the program. I repeatedly fiddled with my configuration and restarted. Eventually, the game would launch, only to crash 12 to 15 minutes later.

This turned out to be caused by the overheating of my graphics card. I fixed the problem with improved ventilation. I decided to post this on the lotro forum, since I play numerous other 3D games, and lotro is the only one that overheats my graphics card.
US Install Workarounds

I installed lotro yesterday. These are my notes on the missing or incorrect items in the instructions.

The HOWTO says:
If you have access to a previous installation or the setup files (a setup program with the large .bin files) then you can still run that setup and then bring it up to date with the patcher.

It does not explain how to get the setup files, or how to install with them. On a Windows box, get the downloader from, then use it to download the setup files. This will take several hours. The result will be a file named MirkwoodSetup.exe and 11 666MB bin files, for a total of about 7GB of files. Transfer these files to your Linux box. Follow the manual setup instructions from WineHQ. When you get to the installation section, run "wine MirkwoodSetup.exe".

In the launcher script section of the instructions, the file "lotrolauncher.script" must be renamed ""

In the playing the game section of the instructions, the line:
cd "$HOME/.wine-lotro/drive_c/Program Files/The Lord of the Rings Online"
should be:
cd "$HOME/.wine-lotro/drive_c/Program Files/Turbine/The Lord of the Rings Online"
losing keyboard input after restore

Just wondering if I am the only person with this problem: Running lotro flawlessly fullscreen under KDE4 for ages now, as of RC1 after cltr+F1 or alt+tab it gets redrawn really small top left corner clicking that will resize if for real but losing keyboard and mouse input till I do a few clicks and alt+tabs/ctrl+f1/f2

tested it on gnome 2.3, kde 4 and similar behavior, but since I see no other reports I am wondering if its just me or ?
No sound (ALSA)

Using ALSA on Ubuntu (no PulseAudio).

All fine, and I have sound in bik-movies, but not in the game. I switch driver to ALSA in winecfg and LOTRO settings, but it doesn't works.

Any advice?

Do you have more than one sound card? The problem I've discovered with ALSA sometimes it the poor ability to select a "default" device, this causes problems sometimes. I know there's some nifty utility for Ubuntu to set the default sound card for ALSA, but I forget what it's called off the top of my head.

Make sure that you have the correct audio device selected in the audio config. These changes don't seem to take effect until you hit "apply" and exit the options window.

If none of this is helpful, please post any output from wine. If you don't have any output (error messages) on wine's console (stdout), then try running again with WINEDEBUG=+alsa,+sound,+dsound,+coreaudio or some such. This may produce a lot of output, so you may need to compress it and upload it somewhere and post a link (if it's small enough, maybe even a pastebin).

On an almost related note, if you have this problem with SDL-based apps (which wine isn't) you can set the environment variable SDL_AUDIODRIVER=alsa to prevent it from choosing pulseaudio or another sound layer. Again, that wont effect this.

I had two problems: «bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)» (apt-get purge bluez-alsa fix this) and incorrect uninstalling of pulseaudio (I have no alsa-keys in gconf).

Now all works.

Performance notes on 1.2 release candidates

I've noticed poor performance with both RC1 & RC2, which do not exist in 1.1.44. I haven't filed a bug report for this, but I thought I would mention here that you may want to wait on 1.2.
20100409 release of 32-bit compatibility libs borked

OK, so this was definately the cause of the problem. So Gentoo recently marked the April 9, 2010 release of the 32-bit compatibility libs as stable (for amd64). However, installing these breaks lotro. :( The solution is to not use this release. I've posted instructions on doing this for Gentoo above.

US Customers
Currently, the lotro downloader/installer is broken and I don't have a fully working system to offer for new players or player who want to install LotRO on Llinux for the 1st time and do not have their previous installation files. Everything except for the large .dat files can be obtained from a minimalistic patcher bundle (just the,, zlib1T.dll and patchclient.dll), but this will not download the .dat files from scratch.

Thus, if anybody has any sources to obtain these or the actual setup program that the Pando installer is supposed to download (which is broken), *please* post!

EU Customers
It would be helpful if I could have an EU customer test the 0.1.5 of the setup script (just posted earlier). The only thing I'm not sure about, is that I should probably either make the download optional, or perform it very last, since the script doesn't automate the install process for that anyway, as it's not a single executable that you just run. Plus, a file that large, you probably would want to use a download manager anyway, so you can start and stop it, as it could take over a day if you're connection is slower.

setup script & Siege of Mirkwood installer

I've updated the setup script (the one that I posted on, which has been down for months now... sorry about that). However, it still doesn't work. The reason is the new Mirkwood installer is failing.

Most of us don't care about this because we already have it installed and we just ran the patch when Mirkwood was released, but the idea of the script is to make it easy(er) for new players to install LOTRO on their Linux and/or Mac machines. Thus, any feedback on the Mirkwood installer (as to what anybody maybe have done to get it working) would be greatly appreciated.

This has solved a lot of problems on my system but has also resulted in no sound at all from wine apps

if running in a terminal and run winecfg I get

err:alsa:ALSA_CheckSetVolume Could not find 'PCM Playback Volume' element
ALSA lib pulse.c:229:(pulse_connect) PulseAudio: Unable to connect: Connection refused

so wine appears to be still looking for a bit of pulseaudio

Two issues were causing me problems. One inside LOTRO and one on Ubuntu

For LOTRO I needed to change my audio settings to ALSA on HW:0,0 rather than on default (I also found OSS worked). I had to restart Lotro to get the new setting to take effect

Second, I knew that without PulseAudio only one audio source can be used at anyone time but didn't realise that while just running rythembox (no music) this doesn't claim asla and other audio app work if you then play music and then stop playing music you do not get audio back until you exit rythembox fully
Virtual Desktop Helps Mouse issue

I have found that going into wine options and ticking, Emulate a Virtual Desktop allows me to play in windowed mode without the mouse corruption issue.

The most annoying part of this is figuring out your desktop size so it doesn't cover your panels. I figured it out by using shutter to take a screenshot using the selection mode before I enabled virtual desktop emulation, then just using the size of my screenshot as the virtual desktop resolution.

P.S. I'm playing the game fine in Windows XP mode.
