What works

Playing: character creation/customization (USS & IKS), all mission types including community authored*, crafting, banking and exchange, bridge and duty officers*, PvP queues, Fleet Action queues, Dabo, chat, mail and help... (ground and space all)

HUD customization*

Sound & Video (missions and cut-scenes)

Configuration (game & launcher)

What does not

Oddly, the only thing completely not working for me is retrieving items returned from the Exchange (button stays disabled on all chars though item is selectable).

Mouse "free look" works correctly but is occasionally 'glitchy':

    a) PoV jumps to due north (suddenly camera is pointing straight down at char from on high); or

    b) camera goes into 'tail spin' (orbiting rapidly around char); or

    c) camera does not stay but slides back to 'follow' position or to some perpendicular vantage point.

Completion text for duty officer missions extends beyond lower edge of the button.  No other placement/layout/format issues have been seen with any other widgets.

What was not tested

High level content over 42 (currently highest level Adm/Gen).  Have not tried STFs or weekly episodes.

Additional Comments

*Significant improvements overall seen with this version (bravo Wine team!): a) Official meta installer now works completely (doesn't crash and no longer need to start actual installer separately); and b) Technically, no winetricks are needed to install, patch, or play. However, Gecko does not render the bottom of launcher correctly: does not display patching process/progress bar does not update, does not show 'Engage' button when done, and leaves a 'hole' in between the two widgets. Installing ie8 resolves these issues. Other notes: *Not sure if this is the game, but all HUD rectangles in customization mode seem too big and overlap; need to constantly verify placement in normal mode. winetricks corefonts ie8 Nothing else installed, including d3dx9! Occasional 'flickering' of some triangles in background nebulas on Radeon HD 6570 with latest Catalyst drivers. No such issues seen with NVidia (e.g. 430 GT). Framerates good and scrolling smooth in missions (ground and space). Laggy in high populated areas on Phenom X3 705e @ 2.75GHz, 4GB PC6400, over 6MB DSL. Need something to hold the screen open for the game client if playing on separate X server in full screen, or the screen closes with the patcher, e.g.: wine Star\ Trek\ Online.exe "$@" xterm The above in a script works for me, though a bit of the xterm 'bleeds through' the upper-left corner of the patcher window.

HowTo / Notes

¬≠This game requires IE7+ to be installed for the Launcher to function.

cd ~/.wine
chmod +x winetricks
winetricks ie8

If walking forward causes your character to roll you will need to enable a work around in the console before playing the game and once finished disable the work around.  This is a bug in X that has been fixed so newer distributions will not have this issue.

Before playing:

xset r off

After playing:

xset r on

In general you will want to play STO using the low graphics option in the profile selector that comes up when the game loads.  If you have very recent hardware you will be able to play using the higher graphics option.

Any other bugs you find should be reported!

To any who may be seeing this, I am a former Hype Man for the 2008 effort which saw Final Fantasy XI finally get up and running on wine.
I'm here to test this game, and, with any luck, find what may be the cause of the framerate issues I observed, particularly in ESD.
Of course, if anyone monitoring these comments has any suggestions for the FPS issues, I may not be a Ferengi, but I'm all ears.

We have fairly high standards on the FFXI ratings, which explains why it's not gold like FFXIV, let alone platinum like this game appears to be rated.

My test platform is as follows
Case: Fractal Design Node 202 (This info only to explain some unusual decisions I made with the system)
CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X (underclocked to 2800MHz because Fractal Design Node 202 && thermals)
Cooling: Noctua NH-L9a-AM4 with Noctua Chromax 92x25mm fan, two Noctua Chromax 120x25 fans on the GPU side of the case
GPU: Radeon RX6700XT
OS: Gentoo AMD64 (I try not to be elitist about it... after all, there's always a bigger fish, but it seems the last time this game was tested on Gentoo was a solid decade ago)
Wine versions: 7.7-staging, 7.7-vanilla
/boot and /: Samsung 980Pro NVME 2TB
/home: Samsung 870Evo 4TB

With my job, other engagements (Namely testing FFXI and planned testing of FFXIV), just getting this system up and running (yes, it's an entirely new build) I don't have as much time as I'd like to dedicate to testing here, but I'll do what I can.
