What works

  • Installing from DVD, entering product key, applying patch 1.1 & patch 1.2
  • Virtul desktop resolutions up to 1600x1200 at highest in-game graphics & quality settings.
  • Sound & Voice
  • Load, Save & autosave -- beware, each savegame weights 30MB!
  • Lionhead's intro is interactive - you can move the container that receives the black and white bricks.

What does not

  • SafeDisk 4.00.002 copy protection. Use nocd -- the English one works with the German version.
  • Needs a native d3dx9_25.dll or crashes in D3DXCreateEffectFromFileA.  DirectX Apr2005_d3dx9_25 is on the CD.  Drop d3dx9_25.dll into BW2's directory and Wine will pick it up, bypassing the need to define an override in winecfg.
  • BW2 is subject to the mouse warp issue #6971 Sometimes a second mouse pointer appears mid-screen and is continuously recentered, then vanishes.  Sometimes the pointer escapes the virtual desktop window, so prefer larger ones. Mouse responsiveness is somewhat lagging, rarely great past the first tutorial.  Fast movement (shaking, slapping the creature) is very hard to perform.  That mouse lag is a continuous source of frustration.
  • Some intermittent surface color artefacts at the lowest graphics settings.
  • Start with WINEDEBUG=err-d3d to avoid a flood of state_pscale GL errors -- bug #22922

Additional Comments

What is PingServer = "" in Black & White 2\Settings.ini? "Early 2009" Mac mini with nVidia 9400GM graphics and OS X 10.5.8 with XQuartz WINEDEBUG=+fps reports 10-12 FPS, but the app doesn't feel slow if it weren't for that mouse lag. Animations are fine. Upto 20-30 FPS are possible initially at lowest settings and 800x600, but even then there's annoying mouse lag. BW2 is well known for performance issues on MS-Windows but I don't know what FPS to expect there.

HowTo / Notes

If install crashes, try again after running winetricks dcom98. Unfortunately, the game won't work with this override enabled, so after installed, go in to winecfg and under the Libraries tab, remove the rpcrt4 entry.
