What works
Installation using Steam (though game purchased through Firefox not the Steam platform).
Some issues starting game - see "What does not work".
Playing the game in single player mode, tested for a few hours, no crashes as yet.
Sound works fine.
Video is pretty good (using a Geforce 8600 GT), though a few textures flicker (minimal impact though).
What does not
Error: "Please insert the Red Faction II disc 1 in your cd rom drive"
Has been ported to Steam and should not need the CDROM, as all Steam installations are done online. However, there is an issue where if there are any CDROMs in the drive, the game will not load. See: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=934300
However, even with no CDROMs inserted, I was still unable to get past the error. I had no CD drives setup in winecfg (Fedora does not use /media/cdrom0 etc. - it mounts the CDs under /media using the disc title).
For the solution, see: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1014211
Back up the existing rf2.exe under: ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/red faction ii
Use the fixed rf2.exe version from Steam thread above, this solves the issue for me.
Aside from a few minor graphical glitches as noted in "What works", game performs well.
Workarounds
What was not tested
