After trying to start up, close the program and edit the Engine.ini file (located in drive_c/users//ApplicationData/Ubisoft/Anno1404/Config/Engine.ini) and change "DirectXVersion" from 0 to 9

Clean wine prefix. Installed and worked like a charm on Nvidia GTX 960M (optimus).

HOWTO

In order to get the game working you must enable DirectX 9 instead of DirectX 10:

Locate the Engine.ini file (drive_c/Program Files/Ubisoft/Related Designs/ANNO 1404/ or drive_c/users/%username%/Application\ Data/Ubisoft/Anno1404/Config/ )
Edit or add a key named DirectXVersion and set the value to 9

The game should run flawlessly then...

Windows user have at moment the same problem

If this problem appears under Windows, it's most likely a server problem. But under Wine it also appears while the servers are running fine.
