What works
installation (takes a very long time because of DirectX installation)
the game works fine (after setting mmdevapi=disable)
sound, music
rendering, visuals are ok
playing the game using keyboard + mouse
What does not
the game crashes on start without setting mmdevapi=disable in winecfg
configuration utility (Setup.exe) - needs .Net 2.0 to run, but doesn't save settings, so just leave it alone (you can edit the game's config file manually)
wine standard mouse cursor is always visible and centered on the screen
Workarounds
What was not tested
beating the game (I've played only the first 3 levels)

Additional Comments
Best to install into a separate wineprefix not to mess up your existing wine installations. Since wine-1.1.36 the game doesn't start without setting mmdevapi=disable in winecfg's libraries tab. The installer automatically installs DirectX Runtimes (there is no option NOT to install it), finishing the setup process takes a long time but finally it succeeded. The game needs "winetricks vcrun2008" to run. You can manually edit the config file: Aztaka.cfg (resolution, color depth etc.) After all these workarounds the only remaining problem I encountered is the doubled mouse pointer in the game: wine's default mouse cursor is always visible. The game's native cursor works fine.
