7-Zip

What works

• compressing and extracting works flawlessly, perfectly uses multiprocessor power, encryption and volume splitting
• does not keep large temp files on your home drive, allows you to compress directly on external drives
• archive testing
• copy & move function
• delete function
• open inside & outside (handy for seamless file browsing between archives and real files)
• favorite folder shortcuts
• saves settings in registry without any problem
• ... even the help file works

What does not

• Does not compress self-extracting files.  Since the creation of self-extracting file is always platform specific, this is understandable.
• Does not stand extremely long path names or path names containing special characters (allowed by OSX, but not Windows), not sure which of both would be the problem.  This is probably due to a software bug in 7z.exe, not caused by Wine.

What was not tested

Not tested with files nearing 15.000.000 TB size, should be still working according to the specs :)

Additional Comments

7-zip Wine works much better than all the 7-zip alternatives proposed on the 7-zip website.  Most alternative apps crash while compressing folders > 1 GB.  The wine version of 7-zip has passed the test with folders > 100GB, rapidly and without any problem.
