What works

NOTE: version tested was the Steam version. Tested without mouse patch.
Installation works fine on Steam
After installing directx9 and vcrun 2008 (and vcrun2005sp1 for luck) with winetricks, the game launches.
Can choose a default character, start a new game, watch cut scenes and start the first planet.
Saving and loading a game works.

What does not

The mouse does not work at all withouth the mouse patch.
can't finish customising a character due to mouse not working properly in menus.
can't choose options in conversation as mouse doesn't work apart from left and right clicks and keyboard navigation doesn't seem to work in conversation menus.
Can't navigate properly due to lack of mouse movement in game. Can go forward to right and left with keyboard, but can't turn. Combat is also almost impossible due to lack of mouse movement.
There are serious graphical issues with facial textures on human models. Possibly also on aliens, but not as noticeable.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Most of the game due to mouse problems. Relevant bugs

Additional Comments

Apparently the game does work fine when the mouse patch mentioned below is applied to Wine. The patch can be found at http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=21554 I'm unhappy about rating this garbage or bronze, We need something between bronze and garbage, as it does install and run, but is unusable for normal use. Also, I'm not sure if Steam games should be n/a for no installer, I suppose Steam acts as the installer and that works.

HowTo / Notes

MassEffectConfig.exe issues

Be aware, that aforementioned stand-alone config utility in version 1.0 (unpatched) of Mass Effect has many issues under Windows as well, ofted resulting in its hang.

This problem occurs mainly (but not exclusively) on quad-processor machines.

Patched version should have this problems fixed (supposedly).

HOWTO

Get audio to work

Edit "Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Config/BIOEngine.ini"
Add the following under the "[ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice]" section:

DeviceName=Generic Software
UseEffectsProcessing=False

Ensure "Hardware Audio" is turned off in Sound settings in game

To get the MEUITM installer to work

A custom MassEffectModder.exe must be suppliedThis is seemingly due to it using functions not fully implemented in wine/mono
A hacky, usable version can be found here: https://github.com/DougTy/Mass...

Occasional "rendering exception" error while playing MEIUTM requires your game's binary be large address aware.
MassEffect.exe can be patched using this tool: https://www.techpowerup.com/fo...
Make a backup before patching!

Avoiding splash screen error and using ALOT
by Ilya Trukhanov on Sunday October 27th 2019, 16:15
I used a clean 64-bit prefix to play the retail release, it crashed on splash screen without DirectX installed. Issuing `winetricks d3dx9_31` seems to help with this.

Also, if you're looking to run the ALOT Installer, you need `winetricks dotnet472 d3dcompiler_47` and Wine 4.18+ for it to work. Although there are sometimes graphical glitches (solvable through minimizing and opening the window again), the application itself more or less works. It sometimes hangs after clicking the download links, couldn't do anything about it, but you should be able to download all the mods to a directory in a few restarts, and then install them without issue.
