Most of the installation, it crashes after the directx installation though, but then the game is installed far enough to run. I patched the game to v1.02 with the official patches, after which the configuration tool worked as well. The config tool didn't give much information though. After installing vcrun2008 and d3dx9 with winetricks the game started. I was able to create a character and start playing.
What does not
The mouse is visible but clicks won't register. After setting dxinput8.dll to native the menus worked, but ingame the mouse has a limited range and doesn't seem to target the right location on screen.
What was not tested
Completing the game
I had to disable the typematic rate in Xorg using "xset r off", otherwise the spacebar menu disappears again after a split second. Using the mousewarp patch found here: http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=25097 pretty much solved the mouse issues and made the game very playable. Note that dxinput8.dll has to be set to 'builtin' for this to work, and you need to start the game with WINEFORCEMOUSEWARP=yes.

Be aware, that aforementioned stand-alone config utility in version 1.0 (unpatched) of Mass Effect has many issues under Windows as well, ofted resulting in its hang.
This problem occurs mainly (but not exclusively) on quad-processor machines.
Patched version should have this problems fixed (supposedly).
Get audio to work
Edit "Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Config/BIOEngine.ini"
Add the following under the "[ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice]" section:
Ensure "Hardware Audio" is turned off in Sound settings in game
To get the MEUITM installer to work
A custom MassEffectModder.exe must be suppliedThis is seemingly due to it using functions not fully implemented in wine/mono
A hacky, usable version can be found here: https://github.com/DougTy/Mass...
Occasional "rendering exception" error while playing MEIUTM requires your game's binary be large address aware.
MassEffect.exe can be patched using this tool: https://www.techpowerup.com/fo...
Make a backup before patching!
