What works

Installer works with minor issues.

Launcher works.

Gameplay works with some window focus issues. Game is fully playable.

There is no longer a mouse setting issue with menus/gameplay in wine 1.5

What does not

Installer for both the base game and patch 1.02 works but crashes at the end when it's supposed to show readme. This is no problem, the installation is complete.

Launcher works, but there is a known issue with the configuration tool, this does not work. The launcher crashes when it runs the config tool, which it does the first time the game is run because there is no existent config. This is a game issue and not a wine issue. To fix, just copy MassEffect2Config.exe from Mass Effect 2 into the Binaries folder of Mass Effect and rename to MassEffectConfig.exe. If you don't own Mass Effect 2, you need to find a copy of this file elsewhere or find a different fix.

Gameplay works, but has issues with saving and galaxy map. These are known game bugs. Get a fixed/cracked MassEffect.exe to fix this, or get official support.

In my window manager there are issues with fullscreen. The window manager will not detect activity and lock the screens as if you were idle. This is not a problem with window mode. I don't know if this is a wine issue or gnome issue, I just play windowed.

In window mode, too many focus switches on the window (Alt+Tab) will break mouse input and require a restart of the game to fix.

There is a very minor graphics glitch with the textures on zoomed in characters.

What was not tested

Complete gameplay, end credits, etc.

Additional Comments

Personally I think it is ok to acquire a fixed MassEffect.exe and a config tool from ME2 if you have bought Mass Effect. There may be legality issues with this in some countries, but not here.

HowTo / Notes

MassEffectConfig.exe issues

Be aware, that aforementioned stand-alone config utility in version 1.0 (unpatched) of Mass Effect has many issues under Windows as well, ofted resulting in its hang.

This problem occurs mainly (but not exclusively) on quad-processor machines.

Patched version should have this problems fixed (supposedly).

Get audio to work

Edit "Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Config/BIOEngine.ini"
Add the following under the "[ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice]" section:

DeviceName=Generic Software

Ensure "Hardware Audio" is turned off in Sound settings in game

To get the MEUITM installer to work

A custom MassEffectModder.exe must be suppliedThis is seemingly due to it using functions not fully implemented in wine/mono
A hacky, usable version can be found here:

Occasional "rendering exception" error while playing MEIUTM requires your game's binary be large address aware.
MassEffect.exe can be patched using this tool:
Make a backup before patching!

Avoiding splash screen error and using ALOT
by Ilya Trukhanov on Sunday October 27th 2019, 16:15
I used a clean 64-bit prefix to play the retail release, it crashed on splash screen without DirectX installed. Issuing `winetricks d3dx9_31` seems to help with this.

Also, if you're looking to run the ALOT Installer, you need `winetricks dotnet472 d3dcompiler_47` and Wine 4.18+ for it to work. Although there are sometimes graphical glitches (solvable through minimizing and opening the window again), the application itself more or less works. It sometimes hangs after clicking the download links, couldn't do anything about it, but you should be able to download all the mods to a directory in a few restarts, and then install them without issue.
