HOWTO

Fix video playing:

1. Install 32bit version of the libav codec pack (which includes Cinepak codec). For Ubuntu command to install it would be:

 $ sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-libav:i386

2. Install native quartz.dll and amstream.dll:

  $ winetricks amstream quartz dsound

3. Run winecfg and set:

  •  quartz.dll to Native
  •  amstream.dll to Native
  •  Disable winegstreamer.dll

Dialogue

In addition to what's in the howto, I had to install dsound too, otherwise no dialogue could be heard. Unfortunately, as mentioned below, this introduces an issue because the sounds are a little crackly sometimes. Still better than no sounds though.
Using 4.1 staging.

Actually, disregard what I wrote.
Using just native amstream, native quartz, and disabled winegstreamer on 4.2 staging and everything seems to work perfect.
Movies playback

This needs some native DLLs, install them with the command "winetricks amstream quartz devenum"

Erratum: sadly dsound introduces sound issues so this is not a valid solution for movies.

On a Mac with WINE v1.8.5 (both Mac and X11 drivers) this didn't seem to work. Videos seem to continue to freeze the game at startup. However, removing the VIDEO folder as suggested by Iathan (on appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=19586&iTestingId=83210) gets the game through to the menus and from there seems to play okay. At least loads both mouse and the characters move. :)
