What does not

Sound is jittery (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=19370). Removing Pulseaudio and replacing it with Esound works great for me.

How to install

Run 'wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks' sh winetricks -q xact vcrun2005 vcrun2005sp1 Install with steam, and should run without any more tweaking. Look out for the linked bugs!

22.0.2.2015 all of those winetricks tricks may not be needed anymore. 

WARNING
Don't use Pulseaudio! Audio stutters heavily with Pulseaudio enabled. If you must use pulse, I've had good luck with sound settings (in winecfg) Alsa Hardware Acceleration - emulated and in regedit, add a key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\DirectSound MaxShadowSize = -1
