Additional Comments
Installed fine but crashed when run with default 64-bit wineprefix, created a 32-bit one (WINEPREFIX=$PWD/.wine32 WINEARCH=win32 wineboot) and although install -- this time run with env WINEPREFIX="$PWD/.wine32" WINEARCH=win32 wine C:\\windows\\command\\start.exe /Unix /media/.../NHL_2001/AutoRun.exe -- again reported finding dx9 so not needing to install 7, when running the game it failed to find dx7, as the previous test data reported. Resolved this using instructions from http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5552#c3 (with various typos corrected): run: env WINEPREFIX="$PWD/.wine32" WINEARCH=win32 wine C:\\windows\\regedit.exe Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\EA SPORTS\NHL 2001 Update values: "D3D Device" "1" "Group" "D3D" "Hardware Acceleration" "1" "Thrash Driver" "dx" I found the 3D Setup program still only listed Software Renderer (presumably because the Description fields in that registry location weren't changed), but the game ran fine. Afterwards, Thrash Driver had been set to dx7z.
