HowTo / Notes

Installation notes

Sort-of working.

Set Windows version to Win98 using winecfg.  The installer will abort if set to WinMe and will not install anything if set to a newer version.

Execute the installer.  Afterwards the Wine version of the following files need to be replaced from those in the installer.  Wine blocks the overwrites during installation so they have to be extracted from the install package and copied manually.  Most any archive manager can extract the files if cabextract is installed.

…/Program Files/Windows Media Player/wmplayer.exe
…/windows/system32/wmvcore.dll

A library override needs to be set with winecfg for wmvcore.dll (native).

If the desktop menu entry (*.desktop) created by Wine does not work or loads the old 6.4 player, it can be started from a terminal:

WINEPREFIX=/home/… wine start.exe /d '/home/…/drive_c/Program Files/Windows Media Player' /unix '/home/…/drive_c/Program Files/Windows Media Player/wmplayer.exe'

It can play some audio files and streams.  Installing "allcodecs" with winetricks can help but ie6 may be needed to work around bugs with the former.

winetricks -q ie6 allcodecs

mp71.exe
