Wizard 101 is an online, multiplayer, wizard school adventure game with collectible card magic, wizard duels, and far off worlds! The game allows players to create a student wizard in an attempt to save Wizard City and explore many different worlds.
The basic areas are free to play, and advanced content can be unlocked by subscription or a pay-by-area model.

What does not
Most of the time, the news does not load in the window in the login screen. But sometimes it does load--the difference seems to be how long I wait before actually logging in. I haven't tested this on Windows, so I can't be certain the delay is a Wine issue, but I suspect it is.
Ravenwood and Vestrilund have the "black wall" problem; however, Windows users have reported this issue too, so I do not believe it is a Wine problem.

Black Wall in Ravenwood/Multi-color Splash in The Commons
The problems of a black "wall" just inside the entrance to Ravenwood and a multicolor "splash" in the Commons are not Wine issues: both problems have been reported by Windows users on the Wizard101 Message Board. https://www.wizard101.com/posts/list/21857.ftl.
Beginning with Wine 1.5.28, GnuTLS is used for secure connections rather than OpenSSL. On systems with older versions of libgcrypt, the launcher will throw up an error dialog when trying to load the Ravenwood News, and console output will contain the line
ient/BankA/WizardLauncher.exe: ath.c:193: _gcry_ath_mutex_lock: Assertion `*lock == ((ath_mutex_t) 0)' failed.
This is bug 27036. According to the bug report, this is fixed in newer versions of libgcrypt, so upgrading that library should solve the issue (it did on my system). For users unable to upgrade, simply clicking "No" will close the dialog and the game will load and play normally.
The platinum-rated test reports above are for a non-legacy Nvidia card running the proprietary driver. Problems have been reported with older Intel GPUs.
