Outcast

What works

Nearly everything. On Ubuntu 11.04 you need to grab the latest wine beta release from here. Wine 1.3.21 fixes a longtime issue of the mouse running away from the screen and not letting you turn your character. 11.04 has an older version of the beta release in the repos so you'll need to either download manually or add a ppa and install the package wine1.3. Afterwards you must launch the wine configuration utility, navigate to the "graphics" tab, and then check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows".

Also of note that works fine is the community hi-res patch. You can get it here. Note that this patch ONLY works with the GOG version of Outcast and not the older retail versions.

What does not

-Tooltips will display below the window for the launcher. Very minimal hindrance considering most of them are useless.

-my laptop's touchpad was causing the camera to hiccup the opposite directions very frequently (even when using a mouse). turning on my 'touchpad disable' button on my laptop fixes the issue.

-Fullscreen was extraordinarily slow for me (both without and with the community hi-res patch). Configuring wine to emulate a virtual desktop increased performance dramatically even with the same resolution.

What was not tested

An actual playthrough of the game. I've got very good faith that this will work without a hitch. Took me a while to get it set up but it's working just peachy now!

Additional Comments

The setup that worked for me: 1) Updated wine beta release 2) configured wine to capture the mouse 3) using the community hi-res patch (but emulating virtual desktop) 4) turning off your laptop's touchpad and using an external mouse if your camera is spazzing out often.
