What works

Everything.  Installer worked fine, although you will have to manually unmount the CD-ROM before inserting disc 2, or it won't recognize the 2nd disc.  Official 1.11 patch also installed fine, as did the "NoCD" patch.

Tried single and multi-player, game runs great with no new issues.  It crashes occasionally when switching multiplayer maps, but the Windows version does this as well.

Various mods/map packs also work great.

What does not

Game crashes at init unless OpenGL settings are tweaked (see workarounds).  I've had this issue on 3 totally different machines running different distros, so this is not particularly hardware-specific.

Workarounds

Must use the following env var to prevent game from crashing at init (note, it installs just fine without this):

MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2002

What was not tested

  • GPU: AMD
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

Also, this game predates hi-res and widescreen monitors...you can get custom resolutions with the following:

1) Install game and launch

2) Access the options and select your preferred video settings, then quit

3) Edit "newconfig.cfg" in the "main" directory of the game install, as follows:
seta r_mode -1
Save and close.  Note, I also had to manually type this command in the in-game console ("seta r_mode -1"), just editing the config didn't work reliably for some reason.
4) Edit "unnamedsoldier.cfg" (may have a different name if you create a soldier name) in the "mainta/configs" directory, as follows (substitute your display resolution as appropriate...you may need to add these lines if they are not there):
seta r_customheight "1440"
seta r_customwidth "2560"
seta cg_fov "115" // sets the field of view

Save and close.

Note that if you change video settings in game, it will replace your manual edits and you will have to repeat these steps.

Pro tip for max frame rate...add these to your .cfg, or type them in the in-game console:
com_maxfps 0
fps 1

Pro tip to skip intros...add these command line arguments:
+set cl_playintro 0 +set ui_skip_eamovie 1 +set ui_skip_titlescreen 1 +set ui_skip_legalscreen 1
