EverQuest

EverQuest clients altered to be played on personal user-run servers. They oftentimes recommend or even require earlier versions of the official EverQuest client (such as the 5 CD EverQuest Titanium release) and offer their own patchers.

What works

Installing, patching, logging in. Game itself runs as fast, if not faster, than it did on Windows. No graphical abnormalities or font issues whatsoever. Changing video options and resolution works, different keyboard configurations work. Zoning to different areas and fighting around the newbie areas worked fine. Chatting with other players worked good. Sound worked fine. Both fullscreen and emulated virtual desktop worked fine.

Basically, everything I tried seemed to work great and exactly as it did in Windows.

What does not

The Main Menu. It worked, but it ran at probably around 1-2 fps, making it very difficult to set initial graphical options (that's where you can adjust whether or not to use the new, higher detail, player models... as well as options like mip-mapping and the texture cache).

Once I managed to get all of those set and got my login details in there, getting through the main menu is a breeze because there is very little navigating involved (pressing Enter will usually take you where you want to go). Though the incredibly slow speed is still a problem.

Workarounds

What was not tested

- Higher quality graphical options... including the upgraded models. I use the old, less resource intensive, ones.
- Higher level content, I only played through the first 5 levels so far.

Additional Comments

I'm playing on the Shards of Dalaya private server. I didn't have to install anything special to get it working, however I had corefonts and gdiplus installed from winetricks. Not sure if those are necessary, but if you have trouble getting the game to work, maybe installing those might help. If the option is available, don't use EQW (a program used for running EverQuest in a window). It both causes problems with running the game in wine, and is unnecessary if you use a Emulated Virtual Desktop.
