What works

Mapsource 6.16.3. The last "normal" version of Mapsource without the later 'tilted' maps feature.

Installing and unlocking maps. Starting up. Basically all functions of the maps. Saving data to OS filesystem. Opening, editing and saving GPX and GDB files.

Sending data/maps to and from GPSr. This after applying the below mentioned workaround needed for more recent GPSr's.

The latest maps are sometimes a bit slower when zooming in and out.

What does not

Sending and receiving Routes, Tracks, Waypoints and Maps to and from GPSr (GPSMap 62 CSX). The reason for this is that the new type of GPSr's are not being recognized by this version of Mapsource. (In programs like Ozi Explorer and GSAK this is not a problem, these recognize the GPSr automatically).

Basically you have two types:

1. The older GPSr's (like GPSMap 60 CSX)

These need an USB driver to communicate with Mapsource. Any articles you read about "ttyUSB0" are for older type GPr's.
It is no use trying to get USB drivers to work with thsi version of Mapsource and the newer types of GPSR's.

2. More recent GPSr's (like GPSMap 62 CSX)

These are being recognised as Mass Storage devices and require/use driveletters in Mapsource. There is a however a simple workaround to get it working:

- Close Mapsource and connect the GPSr, make sure the OS sees two drives, GARMIN and a volume being the micro SD card.
(most users have a micro SD card these days for these big maps)
- Start wincfg
- Click on the tab
- Click on the driveletter of your Garmin device
- Click Show Advanced button below the Browse button and set the Type to: Floppy disk
- Click on
- Repeat this for all driveletters of your Garmin device
- Start Mapsource, the drives will be read during start and seen in Mapsource

If there are no driveletters visible in winecfg after connecting the GPSr you can add them youself:
- Close Mapsource and connect the GPSr, make sure the OS sees two drives, GARMIN and a volume being the micro SD card.
- Start wincfg
- Click on the tab
- Click on the Add... button and accept the next available drive letter (for example D:)
- Select D:
- Click in the Path: text entry box and enter the mount point to your GARMIN
  For example : /media/your-user-name/GARMIN
Note that upper and lower case is important!
This mount point is being used for Tracks, Waypoints en Routes
- Click Show Advanced button below the Browse button and set the Type to: Floppy disk
- Click on
- Repeat the same for all available mount points for your Garmin device
- Start Mapsource, the drives will be read during start and seen in Mapsource
