The model glitch can be fixed with the vertex_blend_sw-1.1.44 patch (http://bugs2.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=28205).
Works with Wine 1.2 but can degrade performance in heavily populated areas (on slow machines).
Before starting you will most likely want to backup your Wine directory by renaming it.
mv ~/.wine ~/winebackup
Before installing FOM via Wine: run winetricks from a terminal and use the following command;
winetricks d3dx9 directmusic directplay wininet ie6 vcrun2008 dinput8 ddr=opengl multisampling=disabled orm=backbuffer mwo=enabled
Alternatively run winetricks and use the interface to manually select what you want - take note that everything above is recommended for FOM; d3dx9, dinput8, vcrun2008 and wininet are requirements.
Now run the FOM installer like you would any other Wine application.
When FOM has installed run it and perform a complete check. You can now either click Start to patch through the launcher or you can quit the launcher and extract the any patches from your Windows installation to ~/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files/Face of Mankind/PatchTmp/Download". If you go with the latter run the launcher again and the patches will be installed without downloading.
Until bug 6971 is fixed you can improve the gameplay by setting mouse sensitivity and mouse smoothing to their maximum level (ingame). This stops the cursor leaving the window quickly. You can also re-centre the mouse by tapping LEFT-CTRL (which toggles the menu).
Another suggestion (not tried) is to turn on virtual desktop in winecfg.
