What works
* Online multiplayer. Was played across Hamachi with a friend for an hour without crashes except when I died from a prop. (All other types of deaths seem to be fine) Note the lag issues in the extra comments box. * Toybox. Though it partially works (maps sometimes download, sometimes they do not) When they do not download, you can reboot the game and try again, repeat this until the map eventually downloads. * Sound. There are no noticeable audio errors anywhere. * Single player gameplay appears to work flawlessly, haven't had any framerate drops except when loading content that I have not yet loaded in that session of gmod.
What does not
* Certain custom maps. I have noticed some simply crash the game right as you go to the load them with a VertexBuffer lock error of some sort. * RT Cameras. (when the RT Material is used somewhere in 3D space) It simply shows up as black. However, it does work if it's on your HUD. * Some special effects (like that weird effect when spawning a prop)
Workarounds
What was not tested
* Microphone functionality. * Toybox in-game (for entities, SWEPs, vehicles, ect) * SWEP, NPC, entity addons. (though should work) * Stability of the game vs many objects working at once. Though the framerate does seem to drop with a bunch of on screen things at once. * What other video setting configurations work without crashes (note what was said in the extra notes)

Additional Comments
For me, running Steam in 1.5.5 works perfectly except for the downloader. (It would linger on prepping files for download and never actually download). I had to use my Windows Virtual Machine to download the content then transfer to my Wine'd Linux install of Steam to boot the game from within Steam. Also the game did not work very well in DirectX 9 mode (background was missing, HUD elements are missing and some GUI elements did not work properly). To fix this, I had to have Steam boot the game with the parameter "-dxlevel 80" to run it in DirectX8 mode which still looks fine. When joining a multiplayer server, your screen would lock up temporarily when you first spawn (nothing is responsive) but it would eventually respond and from there would play at a perfect framerate (this was on gm_construct). Aside from that, loading content would lag until it has finished (spawning props you have not loaded yet) or it would sometimes give you random lagspikes during multiplayer gameplay. (which may have been caused by our usage of Hamachi or my actual connection to my friend) Another note, the game has to be ran in the lowest settings possible. For me, if they were not lowered, the game would crash before you even spawn in a level with a DX8 vertex buffer lock error.

If you are crashing after loading or joining, the Steam In-game Community is usually the culprit of this. It should be disabled, which can be done with relative ease.
