Additional Comments
Gameplay is flawless with no tweaking, save for the character selection which goes about 15 fps slower than the actual game itself. If I tried to start the game without using a virtual desktop, I would get: "Cannot create D3D device. See for more info"

For example I'm using headphones and when the sound dissapears for some reason the game has changed to "2 Speakers" so what I do is to change it back to "Headphones" and everything works perfectly.
This is an issue I get in all source games really and this is the only temporary fix I know, if someone is aware of a permanent fix then please post it.

The sounds stops working in Steam games, even though the Gnome desktop apps are still making sounds. I tried your method of switching the audio options between headphones/speakers/etc., but in the end I had to logout and login to the desktop again before sound returned.
