Additional Comments
installs and works out of box. running under wine from git = slightly newer than 1.3. font problem doesn't happen (maybe because of some direct3d9 commits in git?) fps number is excellent, works with 4x MSAA, 16x aniso, everything maxed completely smoothly on my harware athlon II X2 240 2.8GHz, 2048MB RAM, and GeForce GTS250 1GB. (when I tested other new Source games on older wine, performance was much worse, like in Left 4 Dead 2, so i think it got better)

For example I'm using headphones and when the sound dissapears for some reason the game has changed to "2 Speakers" so what I do is to change it back to "Headphones" and everything works perfectly.
This is an issue I get in all source games really and this is the only temporary fix I know, if someone is aware of a permanent fix then please post it.

The sounds stops working in Steam games, even though the Gnome desktop apps are still making sounds. I tried your method of switching the audio options between headphones/speakers/etc., but in the end I had to logout and login to the desktop again before sound returned.
