Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, and Legacy of the Void, including Starter Editions
Please try the Stater Edition before buying the game to make sure it works on your system (link below). It includes the first campaign (Wings of Liberty) and the Arcade (Mods)
Consider including the following in your test results:
All of the actual gameplay appears to work. This includes: campaign, ladder, custom games, replays, settings, hardware intensive games (like a long 4v4)
What does not
-- Sound does not work with Pulseaudio out of the box, the only thing that worked is allowing wine to take full control of my sound card. I greatly prefer Pulseaudio because I have a multiseat computer and run an mpd server all the time. Basically what this means is if I want sound in Starcraft 2 it disables me from listening to music, and other users cannot have their own sound until I quit the game. This is definitely not an issue with WINE but it is actually caused by Pulseaudio having a bad setup for multilib environments. I am going to make the point that disabling Pulseaudio is NOT a solution! 32 bit WINE will not even use dmix with a default setup, it just steals the sound card.
I explain how to make Pulseaudio work in my extra comments :)
-- The launcher is very buggy in wine. To get around this I start the game with SC2Switcher.exe from the Support folder. When I need to update I sometimes have to do it in a virtual machine running windows then copy the data back over to Linux.
-- Similar to the launcher issue, The web installer doesn't work. Again, the solution I used to this problem was running the installer in a virtual machine then copying the data back to Linux.
What was not tested
I have only tested a few custom games but they all worked perfectly.
-- I did not test voice chat. My instincts tell me it should work though
-- I have not tried loading old replays that start previous versions of the game.
SOME TIPS FOR RUNNING SC2 ON AN AMD64 MACHINE: __Installing the game__ Either install a new version of windows on a virtual machine or borrow a friend's windows PC. Then, use the VM/PC to download the game and patch it. After this, you just copy the SC2 folder to your linux machine. The game should work fine as long as you launch it using setarch and use SC2Switcher.exe instead of Starcraft II.exe __Getting the game to launch properly__ The solution I use to make the game start flawlessly is to run it with setarch. "setarch i386 wine /StarCraft\ II/Support/SC2Switcher.exe" (obviously you would need to edit the path) __Getting pulseaudio to work with SC2/Wine/AMD64__ http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7059586.html#7059586 This thread details what I did to fix Pulseaudio. Essentially, you have to change the way pulse searches for libraries so that it uses the proper one when you are running 32bit programs. If for some reason that gentoo forum link stops working, here is another page with similar instructions http://mapopa.blogspot.fr/2008/10/skype-2.html

If using custom gamma settings or using an application that automatically changes gamma (e.g. redshift) then at specific times, your gamma setting may reset for a short time.
To fix this, open the registry editor and navigate to:
Inside the newly created "X11 Driver" add the chain value "UseXVidMode" and set it to "N".
After a Battle.net update or a crash, there are sometimes old processes left running that may interfere with your next launch. These processes can be killed before trying again:
killall -i -r '.exe'
Or you can do this manually (and more safely):
ps x #and then....kill as necessary after you got the process ID in the first column
#of course it doesn't hurt to take a look at the manual for these commands:
You can download the StarCraft II Starter Edition for free via the Battle.net Launcher, which includes the first campaign (Wings Of Liberty) and the Arcade (Mods).
Please test how / if the game works before buying it.
As of October Windows XP is no longer supported
