Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, and Legacy of the Void, including Starter Editions
Please try the Stater Edition before buying the game to make sure it works on your system (link below). It includes the first campaign (Wings of Liberty) and the Arcade (Mods)
Consider including the following in your test results:
I have successfully installed from CD without much of a hiccup using wine-1.5.25. Updating went well , took about 40 mins? Game plays slow in low settings.
What does not
At medium to high graphics , there were large parts of the ground that were black squares. With graphics set to low , this was no longer an issue. My main concern is low performance. Holding my mouse over the menu button yields some performance statistics and shows poor fps (20max) and some resource stalls.
Small issue... Going into windowed mode , the mouse doesnt line up at all with the surface. Workaround is , enable windowed mode and move your mouse around your screen until you can get the button to glow for when it tells you to keep the settings. then restart sc2 and then your mouse will match up.
What was not tested
For testing purposes , I only played squad tower defense which is the #1 played custom game. Other wise I have not tested any settings.
FPS FPS FPS is the only real issue but its bad. I have tried running on bt5r2 with wine 1.2 , 1.4 and 1.5.25 and I could not get sc2 to work properly. I installed ubuntu specifically for sc2. This is a real basic install. I havent had to tweak anything to get it to work. However , I plan on trying things out and letting this forum know my findings. My computer is a quad core , 2.4ghtz , 4 gigs ram , Im currently running ati 6870.

If using custom gamma settings or using an application that automatically changes gamma (e.g. redshift) then at specific times, your gamma setting may reset for a short time.
To fix this, open the registry editor and navigate to:
Inside the newly created "X11 Driver" add the chain value "UseXVidMode" and set it to "N".
After a Battle.net update or a crash, there are sometimes old processes left running that may interfere with your next launch. These processes can be killed before trying again:
killall -i -r '.exe'
Or you can do this manually (and more safely):
ps x #and then....kill as necessary after you got the process ID in the first column
#of course it doesn't hurt to take a look at the manual for these commands:
You can download the StarCraft II Starter Edition for free via the Battle.net Launcher, which includes the first campaign (Wings Of Liberty) and the Arcade (Mods).
Please test how / if the game works before buying it.
