Guide is a full-featured star charting and desktop planetarium program. It generates charts ranging in size from a full hemisphere (180 degrees) down to one arcsecond, showing an extensive variety of celestial objects. Most people use it for making finder charts for use at the telescope, so it provides a lot of features for selecting how a chart should be drawn. For example, observers of variable stars might want all variables and suspected variables shown, but no galaxies and nebulae and asteroids only down to magnitude 13. With Guide, customizing and printing such charts is very easy to do. The author states he is working on a true Linux port, but I don't know when that will be. See:

HowTo / Notes

The setup program on the CD doesn't work. So you must first download the new Setup program from here.

To start you have to enter Wine Configuration and assign a drive letter to the Guide CD. After that launch the downloaded setup.exe and program will install.

If you have problem in starting Guide, rename the file STARTUP.MAR in the main program directory to startup.mar.

Another trick from the developer of Guide: " If you start Guide from a console, some Wine debugging data will be shown there: mostly complaints about calls to a Windows heap compacting function that isn't implemented in Wine. This is essentially a cosmetic problem, but you can suppress it by hitting Alt-J and entering Wine=y. Once Guide "realizes" it is running under Wine, it won't attempt to use that function and the messages will go away. "

To show bayer letters for star names you can import font symbol.ttf under your Linux environment.
