What works

Installation via Steam, run the game, play the game

What does not

Flickering mouse and screen problems, the mouse can seem confined to a small area in the menu and the game, low performanc and significant graphical corruption although this may be due to my using a radeon hd6870 with a driver that says it's not supported (fglrx 10.12).

Workarounds

What was not tested

Extended play due to performance issues and other bugs

  • Driver:

Additional Comments

Needed to disable GLSL in regedit before it would work. This game is close to working very well, some dedicated effort could make it gold / platinum I think.

1. Install Wine
2. Download and install Steam: sh winetricks steam
3. Download Mafia 2 demo via Steam
4. Create directory tree (when not exist): "WINEPREFIX/drive_c/users/USER/Local Settings/Application Data/2K Games/Mafia II/Saves"
   Where WINEPREFIX is mostly hidden directory of your wine filesystem, /home/USER/.wine by default. USER is your system login name.
5. Create in directory "Saves" file "videoconfig.cfg" with line in format "bpp bpp resX resY 0 0 0 1", for example: "24 24 1280 800 0 0 0 1".
6. Play Mafia 2

"err:module:import_dll Library cudart32_30_9.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Program Files\\NVIDIA Corporation\\PhysX\\Engine\\v2.8.3\\PhysXCore.dll") not found"

Results in dialog box:
"Mafia II"
"PhysX SDK not initialized. PhysX System Software will be installed".

(This loops with each attempt to execute the game, PhysXCore is never installed)

Same happens for me but after this PhysX installer is started and I can install it. Then I quit Steam and another time it was OK.

Cheers, A steam restart fixes that error.

Now:

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x9073c822 at address 0x73eaf0a4 (thread 004f), starting debugger...
err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7bc47c5a
wine client error:45: write: Bad file descriptor

I succefully go trough "completing installation" process (thanks to VirtualBox) and I can start game (I see black screen) then Windows-like crash report with this console output: pastebin.com/M2VRsX52
I believe that it needs Direct3D format (1280070990) implementation to work.
Installs but doesn't run
by Dan Kegel on Tuesday August 10th 2010, 8:49
With wine-1.3.0 from git, doing

$ wine steam -applaunch 50280

fails rather silently; on the console one sees

fixme:gameux:GameExplorerImpl_VerifyAccess stub
err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7edd22b1

(The output is less messy if you set steam for offline mode.)

Overriding gameux to 'disabled' or trying to run the demo without
steam don't seem to help.

I think the bug is in wined3d/d3d9. It looks like the crash is occurring when the game is doing d3d stuff. Look at +d3d trace.

I check that it crashing in "ret = pCallback((IWineD3DResource *) resource, pData);" line of dlls/wined3d/device.c file.
I need to find where is implemented pCallback.

When I commented this line, game starts and I saw short intro, then black screen (due to commented line). So we have to fix bug here

I able to enter menu. If I try to start game or do benchmark, it exits silently without any error.

Do you patch wine or modify something ? What GPU do you have ? Thanks

I only commented out that line you mentioned. I'm using wine current git with ubuntu 10.04 32bit, geforce gtx 260, with ubuntu current driver.
As I mentioned earlier, it isn't a clear application exit. There was an exception after starting new game, but this application handles it silently.

I did,

$ pwd
/home/ielectric/.wine/drive_c/users/ielectric/Local Settings/Application Data/2K Games/Mafia II/Saves
$ cat videoconfig.cfg
24 24 1280 800 0 0 0 1

The same thing also happens in my game; IDK if it's because I'm using Skidrow's version (since I'm using the said exe to run DLC mods) or if there's something wrong with my wine config.
