What works

After

$ winetricks dotnet30 ie6 winxp 

the setup program, VMware-viclient-all-4.1.0-258902.exe, runs. The VMware VSphere Client can be started: a login window appears as shown in the screenshot. When an IP address, valid user name and password are entered, however, the client cannot connect to the server. If instead of an IP address a URL starting with "http://" is entered (and thus SSL bypassed) then the program first puts up a window asking the user to confirm that he wants to make an insecure connection. After this the connection process fails with an error dialog:

VMware has released version 4.1 Update 1 which has not yet been tested. VMware has released version 5.0 but I was unable to get it installed on an amd64 Ubuntu natty system.
