Please note that this is a work in progress. There may be better methods to optimising iTunes under WINE but these are the best so far. If you know of something that could be improved here please let us know.
NOTE 1: your screen might turn black during installs, don't panic, just move your mouse around and you will be able to see windows gradually. Switching workspaces also fixes this.
NOTE 2: The installers will most likely record that they have failed. It should be fine for now though.
1) You might need to use Archive Manager, rar, or WinRar to extract AppleApplicationSupport.msi from the iTunesSetup.exe. Recent tests have not required this, but older versions of WINE seems to still need the extraction.
2) Make sure that your WINE config is set to Windows 7 (your screen might turn black during installs, don't panic, just move your mouse around and you will be able to see windows gradually. Switching workspaces also fixes this.)
3) Run AppleApplicationSupport.msi
4) Once that finishes run iTunesSetup. When it asks you if you want to turn autorun on, select no. iTunes will complain about this later (every time it's launched...) but if you select yes the installer will crash.
5) Switch your WINE configurations windows version to Windows 7.
6) Run iTunes
Check back here often as we will try to keep this up to date in accordance to advancements and suggestions.
I recently recived an email from the administrator to submit a more in depth type report. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit on a AMD Phantom, NVIDIA 8800, 3gigs of ram, dual booted with Windows 7 Home Premium. I have Wine 1.3.23 installed successfully running foobar2000,Steam,ect. I downloaded the .exe file right clicked it > run with Wine and nothing happened. I tried this multiple times and waited twenty minutes on one go to see what would happen. I did not use wine tricks,Play On Linux, or Crossover to try and run this program. I will try these methods and post my results here ASAP.
Regards,
Tyler
Edit:
I happened to try Wine Tricks, Play on linux, and crossover with no luck whatsoever. I currently have wine set to Windows XP....Thanks Andrew for your suggestion about setting my Windows version to 7 instead of XP. I will now try this and report back here.
Edit 2:
I went to Applications>Wine>Configure Wine>Applications and set my Windows version to 7. I tried again with no luck. I rebooted and tried again with the same results. I tried crossover as well setting my new Bottle to Windows Vista (There is not a Windows 7 Option) with no luck.
Maybe Apple just doesn't want us to break their "perfect" monopoly between Mac and PC....*SIGH* Closed source software sucks....But please EVERYONE try this out! Here is the link to the software:

REPORT YOUR RESULTS!!!! LET"S GET THIS TO WORK!!!!

It's not perfect (e.g., if I'm watching a movie and want to check the Internet, I can minimize the iTunes screen, but when I go back, the video's picture is gone. I then have to exit out of iTunes and go back in).
Syncing the iPod doesn't work (but, there are other programs (gtkpod) that will do that), nor does CD burning. Everything else I do with iTunes, however, works.

I am running on a 64-bit box. But when I tried to do the same with the 64-bit version, nothing happened.

1) Extract the msi files from the installer as follow (unrar did not recognize it as a RAR archive). Run wine iTunesSetup.exe. When it ask you to accept the licence, kill wine (wineserver -k 9) (not just click exit as it will remove temporary files); go and fetch the msi files in a temporary directory (do not remember the name; find -iname "*.msi" ).
Then I try several variants:
I)
1) install QuickTime.msi
2) install iTunes.msi
II) install al the msi files.
I have always the same result. itunes run but crash often. In particular when I try to access the store. Accessing the store is the only thing I can't do natively under linux. So for me this is quite useless.

Thanks for telling us more about what you tried. Did you run wine Config (winecfg) before you tried installing? If so, what version of Windows is Wine set as? I've had the most luck with the Windows 7 version.
Thanks,
Andew Riker

but set win7 mode in winecfg first.
App installed and ran well enough to listen
to internet radio stations, local .mp3's,
and to watch video trailers in the iTunes Store.
Didn't try buying anything.
I don't have an iPod or iPhone or iWhatever, so I didn't try
the (probably not working) usb support.
It did complain on startup that the app was not properly
installed and would be unable to burn discs.

Apple Application Support was not found.
Apple Application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall iTunes again.
Error 2(Windows error 2)
And that happens every time. I have done it in Maverick too. I am using 10.2.2 I think if that is what I am submitting this to. I have whatever I am submitting to. I have also tried reinstalling repairing and redownloading none of which work. Anyone have any suggestions?

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but I've started using Rhythmbox. I mean, if you set everything up right, you can plug in your iPod (or go wirelessly) and play things through Rhythmbox from that.
Does that make sense?
I mean, the main point of using iTunes here it to play your iTunes Library. Most things you'd listen to would be on your iPod, right?
Exactly.
Especially since USB isn't supported with WINE yet, you won't be using iTunes to do much more than play songs.

I've installed iTunes 10.2.1.17 successfully under Wine 1.2.2 (Linux Mint 10). I cannot get iTunes to run though.
"Apple application support not found.
Apple application Support is required to run iTunes. Please uninstall
iTunes, then install iTunes again.
Error 2 (Windows Error 2)"
This combination of iTunes and Wine versions have a "Gold" rating here. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be? Changes required in my Wine setup?
Thanks in advance.
Regard,
Mark

distnote.exe appears to be started by AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe, which in turn is triggered by iTunes itself.
Upon starting iTunes (10.1.1.4), simply KILL the distnoted.exe entries (there should be two of them), as well as the AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe (just filter for apple, and all three should come up).
iTunes will simply re-start the AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe, so no harm is done (and USB support doesn't exist anyway), but the re-started version does not seem to have any problems running distnoted.exe --- no more segfaults ;)

After a clean install of Wine, and using winetricks to install some additional fonts (fontfix), that problem is apparently resolved.
However, a Vista or Win 7 setting now leads to 'invisible' fonts in the status line, while XP works just fine --- except for the initial 'screen blacking' upon startup.
by Daniel Flores on Wednesday December 1st 2010, 14:08
I used "winetricks vcrun2005". I also tried with vcrun2008 and vcrun2010. There is no perceivable difference between them so I think u can use any.
I installed iTunes 10.1 from Apple's web page without use of any archiver/decompresser application.
PD: You may want to switch to Windows 7 or Vista to avoid screen problems and quicktime from crashing on startup.

When I installed the MSI files one by one using wine msiexec /i .msi then ITunes started up OK.
I have Wine wine-1.3.5-1mdv2010.1 set up as XP on Mandriva 2010.1.

- AppleApplicationSupport.msi
- AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi
- Bonjour.msi
- AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi
- Quicktime.msi
- iTunes.msi
I think it is only critical to install AppleApplicationSupport.msi before installing the iTunesSetup.exe though. Installing them all seperately did not seem to make much of a difference as opposed to just applicationsupport.

You can use some other programs besides Archive Manager. 7zip will work equally well. You can install it via the update manager. Alternatively, install via terminal:
Yum:
su
yum install p7zip
Apt:
sudo apt-get install p7zip
To extract the files from iTunesSetup.exe, use the following command:
7z e iTunesSetup.exe
Hope this helps.
by Lucas Thoms on Saturday January 8th 2011, 11:47
Now try opening with Archive Manager. Yay, success!
