What works

Some minor problems already mentioned in previous reports aside such as buttons and file open/save dialog reacting reluctant at times (usually pressing ESC, ALT, ESC, then repeating action helps), i was able to
- install the 2010 SP2.1 educational version, using a license server on our uni network
- use the help and tutorial system
- model a simple artifact comprising basic features (extrusions, revolves, chamfers, fillets)
- create a drawing from the model
- assign material to model via material library in right side task pane
- activate the PhotoWorks add-in and render current view
- interact in different ways with UI without noticeable major flaws

What does not

- unstable: application is quite crash prone
- section headings in the property manager are overdrawn by their background every time the right hand graphics area is updated, see screenshot.. - actually happens incrementally from left to ride side like a download bar
- right side task pane has multiple issues: text drawing glitches, internet resources non-working
- hole wizard button gives 'Out of memory or other error trying to initialize data source from standards file "C:\users\empee584\Application Data\SolidWorks\SolidWorks 2010\HoleWizardFavorites.mdb"' because that file is indeed missing for whatever reason (standard installation)

Additional Comments

Installation Procedure (no DLLOVERRIDES, WoW64 i.e. no dotnet): - winetricks vcrun2005 vcrun2008 (is it even neccessary) - wine swwi/data/setup.exe - copy over native comdlg32.dll - wine drive_c/Program\ Files\ \(x86\)/SolidWorks/SLDWORKS.exe This is the first attempt since long and first time i actually got any decent CAD software to work on wine, and i am nothing short of amazed, didn't imagine wine is so close to obliterate virtual machines for the common engineering usage scenario. This piece is almost fully usable! The 3D rendering speed was very fine and without hickups and glitches. Kudos and thanx to all wine devs!

HowTo / Notes

WARNING

Some changes introduced in user SID mapping in 1.3.15 prevents SolidWorks to launch if it was installed before 1.3.15

A simple hack solved the problem :

 env WINEPREFIX=your_solidworks_prefix sed -i "s/S-1-5-4/S-1-5-21-0-0-0-1000/g" $WINEPREFIX/system.reg

HOWTO

by NSLW on (September 25th 2012)

Pre-installation steps

1. Use recent version of Wine(tested with wine-1.7.4)
2. Download winetricks by following command

wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks

3. Install required components by following command

sh winetricks -q dotnet30 vcrun2005 vcrun2008 mfc40

4. Install additional components by following command

sh winetricks -q wsh57 msxml6 riched20

It will take some time because winetricks will download all above components

Installing

1. Go to SOLIDWORKSINTALLATIONMEDIA/swwi/data/
2. Run setup.exe
3. Configure your installation as you like and let installer copy all the files
4. At the end you'll be informed that installation has failed. You will lose your installed files if you acknowledge this, so start your favourite terminal (e.g. Konsole, gnome-terminal, xterm) and type

killall msiexec

The window will disappear and the installation is complete.

Known problems

1. No possibility to install service pack
Optional steps

There are several steps, which aren't required to successfully start SolidWorks, but help in some way:

  1. sh winetricks riched20 - no crash in vba editor
