Sid Meier's Civilization V

Latest game version on Steam, with or without expansions or DLC.

There is a native Civilization 5 port in Steam, but the Linux port is not compatible with a few very popular, Windows-only mods.

What works

Installing works fine For this I used Steam within Wine. Nothing special there. Then the luck is over.

What does not

The application launch crashes with a:

Unhandled exception: page fault on write access to 0x7c002fd4 in 32-bit code (0xf79b06da).

A proposed workaround from 2015, which I haven't tried, is disabling the Gods and Kings DLC.

That, considering the nature of Civilization V, I find an unworkable solution.

What was not tested

  • The game
  • The rendering and sound
  • The network functionality

Hardware tested

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: proprietary

Additional Comments

The interesting part here, is that apparently not everybody has this problem. Why, is sadly not something I can extract from bug reports and working tests.

I got this problem in three different scenarios:

  • WIne 3.0 stable, clean prefix
  • Wine 3.0 stable, with winetricks dll's
  • Wine 3.6 develop, clean prefix

One conclusion might be, that it really only works on older wine versions and that changes since then have broken support.

HowTo / Notes

If you are using this game with steam, see the Steam page for details on how to install Steam.

If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from

Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.

For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.

DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.

Use of downloadable content (DLC) may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing consistent crashes when near the renaissance age when playing with civilizations from the DLC, disabling any DLC other than the expansion packs is advised.
