What works

Almost everything works perfectly.  I downloaded Steam and Civ 5, installed them on my Ubuntu 10.04 system, and played non-stop for 9 hours.  I was very impressed.

What does not

1: A few in-game animations didn't work properly. During diplomacy interactions with some (but not all) of the AI players, sometimes the animation has gaps.  This does not affect the main game play at all.

2: After playing for many hours, the game crashes with no warning or message.  This seems to be caused by opening too many files, and can be corrected by changing a setting in/etc/security/limits.conf.  Edit that file and the lines:

user  soft  nofile 9000
user  hard  nofile 65000

replacing "user" with your user name.  For more information on this, see:

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Steam

If you are using this game with steam, see the Steam page for details on how to install Steam.

If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/

Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.

Installation

For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.

DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.

Use of downloadable content (DLC) may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing consistent crashes when near the renaissance age when playing with civilizations from the DLC, disabling any DLC other than the expansion packs is advised.

Brave New World expansion

"I purchased the new expansion, it downloaded and installed fine, ran also well (I see the new start menu). But after starting the game, several menus are missing: such as purchase buildings/units in the city, unit commands, culture screen, etc. making the game unplayable.

When I load an old Gods&kings game (within the same program) it loads fine and all the menus are where they should be.

Did anyone else experience this too?"

might be wine bug or civ5 bug...

There is native Linux version now!
Enjoy.
