Sid Meier's Civilization V

Latest game version on Steam, with or without expansions or DLC.

There is a native Civilization 5 port in Steam, but the Linux port is not compatible with a few very popular, Windows-only mods.

Additional Comments

AMD x4 core 3.9 ghz 4G RAM ATI HD 4k series, 1G Had to install Steam from steampowered.com because the Steam installer on the disk wouldn't work. Needed winetricks: vcrun2010 and d3dx9. Needed to set orm to backbuffer, or else all the graphics were scrambled and it crashed as soon as it loaded the world. Also needed to set wine to windowed mode or else a large part of the Civ window was offscreen and all the buttons' images were a little below where you had to click, but I think that was an issue with my dual displays and not the game itself. The game slows down noticeably when there are a lot of factions moving a lot of units/managing a lot of cities, but it is still completely playable (and I get those slowdowns on Windows, too).

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO

Steam

If you are using this game with steam, see the Steam page for details on how to install Steam.

If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/

Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.

Installation

For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.

DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.

Use of downloadable content (DLC) may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing consistent crashes when near the renaissance age when playing with civilizations from the DLC, disabling any DLC other than the expansion packs is advised.
