Latest game version on Steam, with or without expansions or DLC.
There is a native Civilization 5 port in Steam, but the Linux port is not compatible with a few very popular, Windows-only mods.

Hardware Configuration: Processor: Q6600 @ 3ghz Memory: DDR-2 800mhz 8GB Video: eVGA 480 GTX SC HDD: 160GB 7200 RPM WD HDD (Linux Test Drive) Software Configuration: Ubuntu Linux 10.04 64-Bit Kernel Version: 2.6.32-25 Generic Nvidia Driver Version: 260.19.12 Winetricks: Vcrun2005, Vcrun2008, D3D9 (DirectX9), Wininet, ie6 Wine RegEdit Configuration: DirectDrawRender = opengl Multisampling = enabled OffscreenRenderingMode = pbuffer RenderTargetLockMode = auto UseGLSL = enabled VideoMemorySize = 1536 Experimental Biases: OpenGL 4.1 Reason: Currently only GTX 4XX Nvidia cards have full working opengl 4.1. ATI won't get their support until early 2011. No other nvidia card has OpenGL 4.1. This is why all experiments have an opengl bias to consider. Confounding Factors: 480 GTX, not everyone owns one. Notes: To minimize Confounding Factors, please match the same drivers and settings I have at least. Comments: This patch update fixed the dark-graphics I was having and some graphics distortion I was having with the previous version. My only error experience was when the game slowed down late-game due to civilizations growing larger, at times inventing a new technology or building a wonder omitted voicing the quote, but the victory quote was not omitted. I did not run a clean install. I simply patched the game and went with what I had. I noticed a lot of improvements. I urge those with failures to try this version.

If you are using this game with steam, see the Steam page for details on how to install Steam.
If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.
For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.
DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.
Use of downloadable content (DLC) may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing consistent crashes when near the renaissance age when playing with civilizations from the DLC, disabling any DLC other than the expansion packs is advised.
