Latest game version on Steam, with or without expansions or DLC.
There is a native Civilization 5 port in Steam, but the Linux port is not compatible with a few very popular, Windows-only mods.
What does not
What was not tested
* used winetricks d3dx9 vcrun6 vcrun6sp6 vcrun2003 vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 * occasionally the sound stops outright * the game runs very well, but is much much slower than on a windows machine (though it crashes less on loading) * sometimes the game will not start up right away and it takes 3 or 4 attempts on Steam to get the game to begin

If you are using this game with steam, see the Steam page for details on how to install Steam.
If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.
For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.
DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.
Use of downloadable content (DLC) may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing consistent crashes when near the renaissance age when playing with civilizations from the DLC, disabling any DLC other than the expansion packs is advised.
