Latest game version on Steam, with or without expansions or DLC.
There is a native Civilization 5 port in Steam, but the Linux port is not compatible with a few very popular, Windows-only mods.

What works
The main menu, when it actually launches. It is a little messed up looking though.
What does not
The game is difficult to get running from Steam. If you click the play button in Steam, the 'preparing...' window appears and disappears continuously in a loop. If you're lucky, the game will start. I have tried to start the game and only once or twice out of its loop of 50 or so tries did it start.
If you get it to work and try to start a game, it will get stuck in the loading screen forever.
Workarounds
What was not tested
Actual gameplay. I never got this far.

Additional Comments
I use an ATI Radeon HD 5770 on x86_64. It's a shame that this game used to run practically out of the box with no issues. Recent Steam patches have broken its useability.

Steam
If you are using this game with steam, see the Steam page for details on how to install Steam.
If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.
Installation
For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.
DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.
Use of downloadable content (DLC) may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing consistent crashes when near the renaissance age when playing with civilizations from the DLC, disabling any DLC other than the expansion packs is advised.
