Latest game version on Steam, with or without expansions or DLC.
There is a native Civilization 5 port in Steam, but the Linux port is not compatible with a few very popular, Windows-only mods.
Played a "quick game" for about 6 hours without problems. Basic DX9 graphics are ugly but changing video settings makes it look great. Took me three days over Easter to get Wine working and here is how you can do it too :-)
What does not
Intro video - 20 seconds black screen at startup Installer comes up BEHIND the background picture where you can't see or click anything. Work around using Wine in a virtual window. Video settings wont save at maximum levels. Perhaps they can be forced with an .ini file? Occasionally (3 times per hour) a unit icon disappearing until I moved around the screen slightly and it was redrawn correctly.
What was not tested
* multi player * directX 11 * custom game
I fresh installed MintDebian onto 30GB SSD and did this: * NVIDIA DRIVERS (version 260) # I have NVIdia 1GB GTX460OC aptitude -r install nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-settings * Wine Here is the page link and below the links to the specific files I needed. I'm not 100% sure if the last 2 are needed as I was having trouble getting sound working cause of Liquorix kernel. http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/ http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/wine-bin-unstable_1.3.18-0.1_amd64.deb http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/libwine-bin-unstable_1.3.18-0.1_amd64.deb http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/libwine-unstable_1.3.18-0.1_amd64.deb http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/libwine-alsa-unstable_1.3.18-0.1_amd64.deb http://dev.carbon-project.org/debian/wine-unstable/libwine-oss-unstable_1.3.18-0.1_amd64.deb download, open folder, right click -> "Open with GDebi Package installer" I've found its best to install with Wine in a window so that if requesters come up unselectable behind the background picture you can still close the window and try it again. Run winecfg in a terminal set graphics to "emulate a virtual desktop" of 800 x 600 * WINETRICKS wget http://winetricks.org/winetricks open terminal in home directory to show winetricks. Run it in terminal with sh ./winetricks now to setup wine using winetricks: -> "Select the default wine prefix" -> "install a windows DLL or component" -> add : directx9, mono210 go back with "cancel" My System: CPU : i5 760 running at 2.4Ghz (12 x 200Mhz) Memory : 4GB Kingston HyperX ram running 200Mhz Video : Gigabyte NVidia GTX 460OC 1GB Storage : Kingston 30GB SSD Here are the maximum graphics settings that will save. Perhaps they can be forced higher with some kind of .ini file? Leader Scene Quality : medium Overlay Detail : high Shadow Quality : low Fog Of War Quality : high Terain Detail Level : high Terrain Tesselation Level : low Terrain Shadow Quality : low Water Quality : high Texture Quality : high

If you are using this game with steam, see the Steam page for details on how to install Steam.
If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.
For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.
DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.
Use of downloadable content (DLC) may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing consistent crashes when near the renaissance age when playing with civilizations from the DLC, disabling any DLC other than the expansion packs is advised.
