Latest game version on Steam, with or without expansions or DLC.
There is a native Civilization 5 port in Steam, but the Linux port is not compatible with a few very popular, Windows-only mods.

What works
Using the disc to install both Steam and Civilization V worked perfectly. In order to display text in Steam, you must use a dll override to disable dwrite. Single player works well, I played several long games and have won Domination, Cultural, and Diplomatic victories. All the graphics setting were set to high, except leader scenes.
What does not
DX10/11 does not work at all, you must use DX9. Therefore, the refresh rate and anti-aliasing of the game is not ideal. You also cannot set the leader scene quality above low, or your game will eventually crash, even with a powerful graphics card.
Workarounds
What was not tested
Multiplayer, Scientific victory, mods, Gods and Kings, DLC.

Additional Comments
I used winetricks to install d3dx9_36 and vcrun2008 before I started, although I noticed that the former is automatically installed by the program on the disc. I tested on two different computers, one with an i7 Nehalem processor, 12 GB RAM, and GTX 260 graphics card; the other had an i5 Nehalem processor, 8 GB RAM, and HD 5570 graphics card. Performance was identical, making it probable that the bottleneck is the lack of DX10/11.

Steam
If you are using this game with steam, see the Steam page for details on how to install Steam.
If you are unable to install Steam from the DVD, try installing it from http://store.steampowered.com/about/
Also remember to disable in-game community if you are using Steam.
Installation
For best results, start with a clean wine prefix, then install vcrun2008, d3dx9_36 and vcrun6sp6 using winetricks, then install the game normally.
DirectX 11 is not currently known to work, use DirectX 9 instead.
Use of downloadable content (DLC) may eventually cause the game to crash after a number of turns. If you are experiencing consistent crashes when near the renaissance age when playing with civilizations from the DLC, disabling any DLC other than the expansion packs is advised.
