What works

- Installation (see extra comments for howto)

- Sound

- In game video clips

- Starting a mission / campaign

- Plane's switches, knobs, push buttons, screens etc.

- Looking at different directions (F1-F5 buttons)

What does not

- A lot of the gui elements do not work properly. Some are un-clickable, some are not cleared from the screen when closed, others are black until the mouse hovers over them.  It all seems like DirectX problem.

- Controlling the plane (the plane spins out of control)

- When plane crashes, it is not detected and the plane continues to fly on ground level.

Additional Comments

After some debugging, found out that the problem with the installer is a missing file that it was trying to open. During the installation, it is searching for a file named "EAREMOVE.EXE", first in system32 and the installation directories and when it is not found in one of these it will attempt to copy it from the CD. My CD did not have it. After searching this file name online, which brought up an unusual amount of scam sites, I found out a comment here: which is about another game but the advice to create an empty EAREMOVE.EXE file in system32 worked. Thinking about it again, indeed the content of this file does not matter to installation or to the game because according the name, it is the uninstall utility of EA. What I am confused about is why the installed did not have it and expected to find it on system32? Were this file shipping in old versions of Windows? The first time I run the game I got a black screen, but the problem somehow resolved after rebooting Ubuntu. In my version of Ubuntu, Compiz will still draw status and side bars over the game's graphics (even though it is in full screen mode). To solve this it is possible to turn off Compiz before running the game (it is called "gnome fallback" or something similar, did not try it). Alternativly it is possible to installl "CompizConfig settings manager", then open it, browse to Utility->Workarounds and mark "Legacy "Force Full Screen Support". Apparently there are some patches to the game found here: might try to run them later. Tested with ATI Radeon HD 6570.
