First of all, I should mention that my game is slightly modified (my saves are accepted as vanilla at UPLINK). It is unpacked (not completely, only .cat/.dat pairs unpacked, .pck's are in place). Also I have /mov/00002.dat and 08300.dat, and /object/cut/00948.bod files removed. This way menu crap (08300.dat, 00948.bod; Jupiter, station, spinning billboards) is cut, reducing menu loading time to less than a second. Also this (00002.dat) prevents videos on in-game billboards from playing which is probably the workaround for bug 22615. I never did a clean install, I just copied existing Windows installation into a clean prefix. Together with saves, of course. Tricks listed by Raziel never helped. The level of game remained the same after d3dx9, wmp10, allcodecs, additional libs installation. No sound at all except for the very first one in the menu where it plays either selecting "new game" or scrolling to "continue". Videos are not played at all. Never tested tricks in the comments. Will do sometime later. Maybe will try installing Gentoo and running in it if nothing helps.
