Selected Test Results

What works

  • General movement and combat.
  • VATS -albeit slow and sometimes crash-y
  • NPC interaction
  • BGM and Pipboy radio, some bugs and often loss of sound during play.
  • All trade and inventory menus and submenus
  • DLC loads properly (tested with all current modules:Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Lonesome Road, Gunrunners and Courier Stash DLC)

What does not

  • Sound on occasion fuzzes out or ceases for up to 30 seconds. Usually can be repaired with a zone transition.
  • Annoying mouse cursor in center of the screen. Reading regarding xinput and steam games, I suspect that Steam overlay is somehow involved. Cursor persists despite disabling in game overlay.
  • VATS, while functioning takes a hit performance wise and can yield weird to fatal results. Fatal results reproduced primarily at extreme ranges.
  • Performance is good, but could be better in scenarios with multiple actors.

Additional Comments

Very impressed with how far along this game has come in terms of performance. The remaining issues that I've encountered in F:NV seem like the type that could be circumvented with patched drivers or a dirty cursor hack if need be. I'm quite confident that this could be upgraded to an easy platinum status by the end of the year.

HowTo / Notes

Requirements for running

Things needed to be installed for F:NV to run;

winetricks d3dx9

winetricks quartz* - Maybe

*With 1.3.25 onwards, some dll overrides could cause issues (I'm looking squarely at  quartz) - This could just have been an issue with me because I have a wine-steam prefix with as many games that work as possible in there, had to move New Vegas to its own prefix after these issues. The winetricks version of quartz is from directx9, a user reported that he needed the win7 version for it to work. YMMV

This will be updated if anything else comes up as a requirement.
