What works

Game installs in winecfg under 32-bit wineprefix and game launches from Wine submenu in Start Menu

What does not

Noisy Bits does not play sound, possibly other Pythonizer apps won't launch. Results in Error Message

"You must install pythsfx.dll to your hard drive to have keyboard sounds activated. Do you want to install this 1402KB file from xdg_session_class=userfamily", and error message "install failed! Unable to copy file," when you click yes.

This results in another error message "Unable to load sounds from pythsfx.dll" after copying/moving all .dll files to C:/Windows drive in Wine directory.

Workarounds

Pythonizer runs from the Start Menu shortcut in Wine on Linux Mint 21.1. You launch winetricks in the terminal, follow the steps below. To install the 32 bit prefix for wine, perform the following BEFORE you install wine.

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo mkdir -pm755 /etc/apt/keyrings
sudo wget -O /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key https://dl.winehq.org/wine-bui...
sudo wget -NP /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ https://dl.winehq.org/wine-bui...
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine winecfg
sudo apt-get update -y;sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

If you are running something other than Ubuntu Jammy or derivatives, change the distro in the sources line to the one you need.

Launch winetricks in the terminal, Select the default wineprefix, change settings, winxp.
Launch winecfg from within winetricks gui.

Navigate to your Python folder or mounted iso/setup.exe from within winecfg, select Windows 95 for the environment, and click okay.

Navigate to your Monty Python setup.exe file, right click and Open with Wine Windows Program Loader, and it should install.

When it asks you if you would like to open Pythonizer, select no, and instead navigate to the Pythonizer link in Wine submenu of your Start Menu, and it shoud launch.

There currently is no fix to the sound problem. When you run Noisy Bits after game installation, you get an error message

"You must install pythsfx.dll to your hard drive to have keyboard sounds
activated. Do you want to install this 1402KB file from
xdg_session_class=userfamily", and error message "install failed! Unable
to copy file," when you click yes.

To fix this, you must copy pythsfx.dll (and any other .dll files you want) to .wine/drive_c/windows folder, at which point Noisy Bits will inform you that it is "Unable to load sounds from pythsfx.dll." When you run it again. A fix needs to be found for the pythsfx error at present.

What was not tested

Everything other than Noisy Bits in Pythonizer

Additional Comments

The bottom line is that Pythonizer does run. A fix needs to be found for the "Unable to load sounds from pythsfx.dll" error message, as outlined in bug https://bugs.winehq.org/show_b... .
