Additional Comments

I ignored all the out-of-date guides from 2011. If I try to just run the install.exe on the CD-ROM, Wine prompts me to install Mono in the middle of the install, and the Quicken install fails. Here's _all_ I did with no existing ~/.wine and no Wine environment variables. * Follow http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu to install wine1.7, which also installs the wine-mono0.0.8 package. * Run winecfg without changing anything. This silently installs the mono runtime to ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/mono/mono-2.0 * Then run wine /media/MYNAME/Quicken\ 2011/install.exe reported "The wizard has successfully installed Quicken 2011". Note: no WINEARCH, no winecfg settings, no winetricks! However, Quicken quickly crashes. I don't know if this is during registration or normal operation. So I'm back to cargo-cult randomly choosing out-of-date winetricks and winecfg settings to make it go.

HowTo / Notes

Installation tips from Quicken 2013 that may be helpful

From http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=30158

  • vcrun6 msls31 and gdiplus all seem unnecessary, and in fact gdi seems to significantly slow down Quicken.   Microsoft fonts, Internet Explorer 6 or higher and .Net 2 or higher seem to be all that's needed with wine 1.6 or higher.
  • Manual and automatic updates can fail if host system is connected to the internet during original installation and during any automatic or manually downloaded & applied updates.  Try updating manually with host internet disabled.  Quicken automatic software updates should be disabled.
  • If running on a 64 bit machine, force 32 bit in wine via environment variable as some versions of wine have issues on 64 bit machines. (eg "WINEARCH=win32 wine ....")
  • If installing on a multiple core system, run all operations on a single core only as multiple core operations do not seem to be well managed under wine + Quicken.  (eg, "numactl --physcpubind=+1  wine ...")
