HowTo / Notes

HOWTO install Yahoo! Messenger (but than it will not work!)
  1. Download the online installer from Yahoo!.
  2. You will get a file called msgr11us.exe.
  3. Open a terminal session.
  4. Run this installer: wine /path/to/msgr11us.exe.
  5. In Step 1 of 4 choose Custom Install.
  6. Uncheck all excepted Yahoo! Messenger* (required).
  7. Hit Next for the next step (Step 2 of 4).
  8. Accept the Privacy Policy, otherwise the installation will not continue.
  9. Hit Next for the next step (Step 3 of 4).
  10. An overview is given.
  11. Hit Next for the next step (Step 4 of 4).
  12. The installer will download all necessary files and install them.
  13. Uncheck Launch Yahoo! Messenger. Otherwise it might crash.
  14. At last hit Finish to end the installation.

The installation is finished. You can start the Yahoo!Messenger by typing in the terminal:
wine /path/to/Yahoo!/Messenger/YahooMessenger.exe
(You will have to replcace /path/to/ by the correct path.)

There are some errors in the GUI: e.g. see bug no. #21579 and others. Until now YIM - Yahoo!Messenger isn't really working on wine.

If you want to come closer to some problems you will need to use winetricks:
winetricks riched20
will help to prevent the bug no. #21579 but than you will run into the next bug(s): you can send a message but not receive one. So this is only for experimental use.

This version is not really for productive work. Use native clientes like Pidgin, Kopete or so instead.
