DLL Overrides and warning for some Nvidia users

From personal testing and user's in the threads the following workarounds work for fm2011.

Overrides

  • d3dx9_36
  • d3dx9_41
  • d3dx9_42
  • gameux (disabled)
  • wlanapi

At the most you will need these to get fm2011 working.

Warning for some users

It seems that mostly Nvidia users are affected by this and in a variety of a distro's; basically if you run fm2011 and it doesn't come up straight away and your last msg involves the "cannot change backbuffer count yet "

A user suggested downloading a program called "stress" and running;

stress --cpu $(number of cores you have)

This seems to help the game load quicker, it doesn't work everytime. Alternatively you can wait (faster the computer, the longer it takes from testing). I also found running another direct3d game in a window elsewhere also helped (for me it was an EVE Online client)

Another warning, starting a new game from within a game (as in not from main menu) seems to result in the game hanging, it's as if it's restarting it's 3d engine which triggers the problem above. You would need to quit and start from main menu if it dies.

All credit to everyone involved.

Not working with Ubuntu 13.04 (?)
by NP on Friday July 12th 2013, 8:48
Hello,

My config is: 64-bit laptop computer (Intel® Core™ i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz × 4) with a standard Intel® Ivybridge Mobile graphic card and 8 Gb-RAM. I'm running Ubuntu 13.04 and Wine 1.4.1. I've purchased FM11 so I can run the original .exe + actual CDRom.

I've failed to run fm.exe after installing the game without any visible issue. The error message says: "Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x0000040a in 32-bit code (0x014511d8)". Same failure after applying the official "fm2011_v11.3.0_pc_patch.exe": "Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x0000040a in 32-bit code (0x0147ef58).

Help? Thanks a lot if any.
My data
by Benjamin on Friday April 15th 2011, 9:39
Didn't know if this would be helpful or not. I've tried multiple guides around, and this has gotten me the furthest.
I'm running the game on a netbook with Intel 950 gfx - and ubuntu 10.10. with 1.2.2 Wine(Tried 1.3.17 earlier, but it didn't work). The gaming ran without problems in windows.
As you see below, the game now post a dump file, which I believe means that the game at least opens, though it times out in the end.
Anyone got at clue what I can do from here?
This is my terminal:

Solution to the failed startup issue.
by Issam Mehssani on Saturday January 29th 2011, 15:37
Hi,

I'm having the same issue as a number of users, where the game does not start and has to be killed and restarted several times before it does launch.

I noticed that on my regular machine I had to try several times before it worked, while on my parents machine (which is weaker), it only took a couple of tries. Then I got myself a brand spanking new top of the line machine and suddenly, I almost can't launch the game, even after 15 mins of trying. So I though it might be tied to computing power somehow.

I installed "stress" on the new machine, it's a program that allows you to launch processes to stress your cpu or hdd.

I used "stress --cpu 8" which launches 8 processes that do intense computing, and suddenly, I only need a couple of tries before the game starts!

This can be used as a workaround to launch the game, and might give the devs an idea on the cause of the bug.

Very interesting... that might explain why I've gotten it to work on my laptop (a low power core 2 duo) but on my new machine (6 core athlon) it just refuses to work!

I shall look into this myself, cheers for the idea

yes, i've heard of this bug occuring in a game called EVE and certain users prescribed the exact same solution you've just given :) it doesn't appear to be a bug in wine though according to what i've read... kernel issues :/

actually, a thought just popped into my head that might get around this issue... what linux kernel is everyone using?

it might be more useful to know that info rather than OS, gfx card, etc...

2.6.37-gentoo myself, as for the config... well I'll provide that if you ask for it but if I know what you're thinking I'll tell you if it's enabled or not :)

Oh just wanted so say something else, on your blog you have quite a few dll's on there. I ran the game with WINEDEBUG="+loaddll" and very few of the dll's on there match what you had changed to native.

Might be worth comparing the two and take out what we don't need? I would do it gladly but alas the game doesn't work for me at all as we all know :)

I refound which DLLs that It needs to start all the time.

d3dx9_36.dll
d3dx9_41.dll
faultrep.dll
odbcbcp.dll
pdh.dll
userenv.dll
winsta.dll

It only works with wine 1.0.1. It starts between 3 and 5 secondes, all the time.
With archlinux 64 bits, catalyst 11.2, under POL

Football Manager 2011 doesn`t work :c
by Tym on Thursday January 13th 2011, 4:30
Hi. I have Ubuntu 10.10 and WINE 1.3.11. I install FM with our instrtuction but it`s doesn`t work. In begining FM starts properly but after intros (War Child, Let`s kick rasism out of football etc.) i have error. It`s about problems with WINE or FM. How about that? I have Intel chipset GMA950, but in Windows 2D works fine. I tried in patch 11.1.1 and 11.2.1 and nothing. After intro i have error.

i have read your blog and am quite confused about your install process, as you install nothing via winetricks?

how exactly did you get around that step?

thanks

ah right, sorry, my bad... the "here" link looked the same colour as the background when i skimmed the page the first time so i didn't see your directx install link :P

having read it now, i would to ask are you sure so many .dlls are needed to be able to run the game? have you managed to test with less?

thanks

the only error i've had after the loading screen before would be the game not recognising the cd... is this what you mean? if so then you need a crack. game does not recognise the cd sadly...

Cheers, it translates pretty cleanly in Google so I'll give this a go tomorrow at work.

Were you able to install the game or did you have any kind of problem?
P.S. this evening i'm going to make a translation of the post so if you need it in english you can find it in my blog. francksblog.altervista.org/

Oh I went over your instructions with a fine tooth comb (google translator is VERY good)

I tried all that and still get stuck on the doublebuffer issue.

Here's my current plan of action;

I'm about to try and get fm2011 running on a win7 vm with process explorer in both 2d and 3d mode if possible to see what DLL's the game are actually using. I honestly would be happy with a 2d mode that worked like the old days.

Hopefully some obscure dll is in this list. I'm off to watch Arsenal in a few minutes but over the next day I'll post my results.

I suggest you to install directX (i've also put a list of the dll you need) like I've exsplained here francksblog.altervista.org/how-to-install-football-manager-2011-on-ubuntu-10-10/ and the use also the code that I've wrote always in this exsplanation... wine must have the 3D option all working if is not the game crush (I don't know why)... another thing wine must emulate the desktop in 800x600... I've update and translate my blog in the link... trie to check again and if you have problem ask me (if you write a comment under my post i'll answer as rapidly as I can)

Thanks for your efforts on your blog but they simply did not work for me :(.

I seem to be the only Gentoo user here so it could be to do with that, I did get the game working once (the pics on the game are from the demo I got working almost instantly).

I'll spend more time looking into this because I bought the game a couple of months ago now and I have yet to play it :P.

cheers,
Maq

How are you people running this?

Because I'm cereal... I cannot get this working. I constantly hit the cannot change back buffer error and then nothing.

Can we post virtual desktops used? OS, gfx card, driver version? I seem to be the only Gentoo user here so it could be something distro wise.

Cheers,
Maq

I'm using Archlinux 64 up-to-date, a Radeon Mobility 4850 (catalyst 10.12).
Wine version : 1.0.1. Default configuration. I installed Direct x9.

After few tests under POL to test others versions (and find with 1.0.1 version it works), I copied odbcbcp.dll and others dlls that I don't remember names. But I don't think they are important.

I'm detecting a huge success rate with ATI users! But apparently it does work some Nvidia cards as well (like it did with mine once with the demo and I do mean _once_)

Nuts lol. Your tip didn't work either :(. I'd be more then happy playing the thing in 2d anyway, this is the first fm ever to crash in 2d that I recall.

Cheers though!

I receive that error also (unless I suppress console output) and I can run the game fine, so I don't think that particular error is your issue...

Did you read the installation guide I put under 11.1.1?

If you have, and the error you receive is also the same one as the last one i receive before the game freezes on me, then you have the same issue as me.

In short, the game doesn't load most of the time. you could maybe try the processor workaround that somebody mentioned above?

Also, I have an Nvidia GFX card :)
fm 2011 crash dump
by franck on Friday December 31st 2010, 13:21
i've got ubuntu 10.10 and wine 1.3.10. i've installed fm 2011 and installation went fine, i can play but just if I don't keep enabled both the 3d option, but that's not a real problem, (i don't care to have match in 3d). The real problem is that after a match i click continue and he crashed (a message appear and say that there's a file in a folder; i've found the file but is a .dmp and i can't open it...
i've also tried to go on holiday but at the end of the match after, i've got the same problem. Also if I just click on the result of a game (to have further info) the game crash.
In conclusion the it crashed when i'm in the match page and i click contiunue.
any solution??

"dump files" are generated for any (in-game/post-loading-screen) crash in fm, and can happen on windows too. chances are though that you haven't got the right .dlls if it's happening to you on linux...

Have you read the install guide under version 11.1.1?
