Test Results

Old test results
The test results for this version are very old, and as such they may not represent the current state of Wine. Please consider submitting a new test report.
Selected Test Results

What works

Game works 100% with Wine 5.x up to 5.0.4, DLC included (Episodes from Liberty City).

The 6.x releases didn't work for me, the game crashes at launch.

What does not

The game opens with a blck screen with the 6.x releases.

However, the 5.x releases work 100%.

Workarounds

Using Wine 5.x releases.

What was not tested

Gamepads or joysticks, as I don't use any on PCs.

Hardware tested

Graphics:

  • GPU: Nvidia
  • Driver: open source

Additional Comments

Performance can be improved by adding a commandline.txt file at the game's directory, with the following contents:

-memrestrict 230686720

This will diminish the periodical "stutter" that the game may exhibit (on Windows, too).

HowTo / Notes

HOWTO remove GFWL from GTAIV

Games for Windows - LIVE does not work under Wine. GFWL components will crash any game that use the service. The only thing to do about it is to cut XLive out using XLiveLess Patch.

INSTRUCTIONS

1) Download the latest XLiveLess patch from here.

2) Unpack xlive.dll into the game folder.

XLive is out and the game launch is unobstructed. Please note that from now on the online play via GFWL is disabled so as to prevent cheating.

Gamepads
Follow the instructions here to make your gamepad work:

In-game TV
by Dennis Mayr on Sunday January 31st 2021, 18:42
In-game TV can't be watched, since it crashes the game.
Previously, I renamed the 'movies' folder to 'movies_bak', so the game couldn't find the files and therefore there wasn't any playback.

A while ago, I thought that it could be a video codec issue, so I googled around, and found out that Rockstar used the Blink codec.
I installed it from the RAD Game Tools website: www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.7z

Tried again with the Blink codec installed, and it worked!

Thanks for the tip!

How did you installed Blink codec (what exact command)?

The archive (www.radgametools.com/down/Bink/RADTools.7z), when extracted, yields an .exe installer that will add the driver and some converters to the wine prefix.
Just run the installer, and voilĂ  :)
