What works

Everything so far. Probably the most important parts of this game, sound and lighting, seem to work perfectly.

What does not

Difficulty seems to always revert to medium even if you don't pick it in the beginning. This might be my imagination, but I swore I picked easy and somehow became medium a few chapters later. This could just be an issue with the game itself, not with wine.

Workarounds

What was not tested

Game completion 100%, played the first 3 chapters thus far with no crashes and minimal frame rate drops on highest settings.

Additional Comments

I've tried most engines available from 1.1.38 to 1.5.6 with some major differences among them. I eventually settled on WS8 1.3.2 (After testing a number of engines, 1.3.2 seems to work the best, providing the highest fps and least amount of graphical errors overall.) winetricks used are as follows: mwo=force psm=enabled (should be enabled by default) vsm=hardware (Even though there seems to be a lot of missing effects, this is minor compared to the amount of detail still left in the game. Everything still looks as creepy as ever and you likely won't notice many of the missing effects.) Graphical issues that still persist: -Holograms do not appear (This makes it more difficult to navigate some menus but nothing is broken, the game is still completely playable.) -A few texture images do not render, mostly in space (This includes background planets and asteroids, most noticeable in the opening scene of the game.) -Fire and flames do not render (You can hear fire but you can't see it. The same rendering technique as the missing warp affect in the beginning scene of the game.) -Some splatter and smoke/dust effects are missing (Most noticeable when shooting the plasma cutter and stomping on creatures.) Problems that have been fixed when using the 1.3.2 engine: -Lighting is now rendered perfectly (where before there would be some distortion along the edge of many objects that had light casting over them.) -major performance boost (An extra 20 fps can be expected.) -no more mouse problems/higher mouse sensitivity (Most of the early and later engines I tried had mouse issues one way or another.) ------------------------------- I used an AMD Radeon HD 6750m gpu for this test. It has come to my attention that most if not all of these issues are connected to using AMD/ATI and Intel graphics cards. NVIDIA cards may not have these graphical errors. ------------------------------- I used the steam version of the game. I believe a crack wasn't needed.
