Gameplay works fine at full framerate
What does not
There is no sound at all.
The game throws an error on launch about missing MSVBVM60.DLL then closes.
Workarounds
You can fix the error for MSVBVM60.DLL by downloading it from any DLL website, then placing it in the SMBX install folder.
There is no workaround for the missing sound (so far).

To be able to successfully run Super Mario Brothers X under Wine, you need to install MP3 gstreamer codecs.
For Ubuntu you could install it via command:
sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-plugins-good:i386
